Growing Your Photography

2020 has really thrown us for a loop, and those of us born to travel are feeling especially grounded right now. All is not lost though! When we are forced to slow down, we get an opportunity to take stock of how far we’ve come, and what we still want to accomplish. Contemplation time can help jumpstart the next phase in our photography.

Evaluate your skills and practice

Life for most of us is pretty fast-paced, with our photography fit in where we can. Many of us haven’t even reviewed images from trips we took a year ago. If this sounds familiar, today might be the day you go through those images and identify some areas you would like to work on. Are you missing the focus a little in every shot? Maybe it’s time to learn more about focusing modes and focusing areas. What about your exposures? The histogram is here for you. All of your compositions look the same? Think about ways to mix it up.

Remember, too, that photographing doesn’t have to stop just because you aren’t in an exotic locale. If you’ve wanted to learn pan blurs, then practice with your dog chasing a ball (your dog will appreciate it too!). If you haven’t quite mastered birds in flight, every community has birds. If you’ve always wanted to capture a mountain range as a panoramic, then get out in your backyard with your camera. It may not be quite as grand as those mountains, but it will work just fine for practicing your skills!

Be a tourist for a day or a weekend

How many times have you told yourself you’d check out that wildlife preserve near your home, or that you’d take a few days to explore a national park in your state? While most international travel is still challenging right now, domestic locations are definitely starting to open up. It may be necessary to take more precautions, yes, and to stay on top of shifting regulations, but it’s definitely possible! What have you been overlooking that is near you? Even a trip to a local pond can yield some interesting subjects and opportunities for creativity. You might be surprised at what you find!

Learn with us

We miss travel as much as you do but we also recognize that you have concerns about safety, especially in far-flung destinations. We’ve been working hard at Muench Workshops to increase safety measures on our existing workshops, and to introduce some brand-new workshops closer to home. If you are ready to gear up for domestic travel again this autumn, we’ve got some great options for you.  Visit the Adirondacks for some fall colors or photograph the wildlife of South Texas from comfortable blinds. Our carefully selected fall destinations will keep you learning, and keep you safe.

If you aren’t up to travel quite yet, stay tuned! We plan on adding to our online classes very soon.

Don’t stop growing in your photography! We’re here to help.
