Michael Strickland
Michael Strickland

Michael Strickland is a photographer and printmaker whose work is grounded in patience, precision, and a deep connection to the landscape. Working with large-format film and traditional handmade printing processes, he brings a deliberate, highly considered approach to every stage of making a photograph, from the first act of seeing to the final print.

Michael specializes in platinum-palladium and carbon transfer printing, historic processes that require a deep understanding of light, tone, negative quality, paper, chemistry, and craft. His expertise has led him to print for master photographers including Paul Caponigro, Kenro Izu, and Jeffrey Conley, and to work alongside renowned galleries, museums, and estates on projects where the finished print is held to the highest standard.
This background gives Michael a unique perspective on photography as more than an image on a screen. For Michael, a photograph is a physical object shaped by decisions made long before the shutter is released. His work as a printmaker informs the way he sees in the field, helping him recognize how light, structure, atmosphere, and tone will carry through to the final image.

In the field, Michael helps photographers slow down and see the landscape more clearly. His teaching focuses on composition, light, structure, atmosphere, tonal relationships, and the quiet decisions that give an image strength. He encourages students to move beyond simply recording a place and begin understanding how a photograph can hold presence, rhythm, and emotional weight.

Michael brings a calm, thoughtful, and highly practical approach to instruction. Whether students work digitally or with film, he helps them refine the way they see, respond to light, build stronger compositions, and connect their field decisions to the expressive potential of the finished photograph.
