Join us for a deep dive into black-and-white infrared photography. Whether you’re an experienced infrared photographer, a beginner, or want to get started, this workshop is for you. We will focus on the art of black-and-white infrared photography. Our specially designed itinerary will ensure maximum shooting opportunities in a wide variety of settings.
The Adirondack State Park is the largest protected area in the continental US, and our opportunities for stunning photographs are seemingly endless. It’s a target-rich environment that’s sure to draw your eye to its possibilities. Stunning vistas and intimate forest scenes will allow us to explore extended techniques like long exposures for moving water or clouds.
This trip is timed to minimize the notorious buggy season in the Adirondacks earlier in the summer. However, we’ll still be able to take advantage of the morning fog on the water and all the green foliage that pops out in infrared.
Infrared photography poses unique issues; we’ll guide you through them all. Need an infrared camera? No problem. We can advise you on your purchase or rental before the workshop. We’ll review lens hot spots, exposure, focus concerns, post-processing and more. For a brief introduction to infrared, see our blopost on Infrared Photography. Read through it and then contact us with your questions.
Note: There are many ways to create infrared images, including many that result in color images. This workshop will focus solely on monochrome photography with infrared converted cameras.

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
We’ll meet you at or near Albany Airport at 12:00 PM and drive about 90 minutes to our hotel, which will be our base for the next five days. If you’re driving yourself to the lodge, we’ll provide directions for your arrival by 1:30 PM. After check-in, we’ll gather for a short session on infrared photography techniques and common technical issues, then head out for our first afternoon of shooting. After dinner, we’ll review images together so we can catch and solve any technical concerns right away.
We’ll spend three full days photographing in the central Adirondack lakes region and the southern High Peaks, with locations chosen specifically for infrared photography. Because infrared often shines in midday light, our schedule won’t revolve as heavily around sunrise and sunset as a traditional landscape workshop.
We’ll work in a range of classic Adirondack settings: forests, rivers, lakes, bogs, waterfalls, and quiet wetland edges. Areas we may photograph include the greater Long Lake region, Whitney Wilderness, the Raquette River drainage, Tupper Lake, the Newcomb area, and the Boreas Ponds tract.
Along the way, you may find yourself photographing cascading water at Buttermilk Falls, calm riverbanks lined with silver maples at Axton Landing, morning fog near Brown’s Tract Inlet, or wetlands filled with standing dead trees, cattails, and lily pads at places like Lake Durant and Panther Mountain Bog. We may also explore Bog River Falls, remote bridges along the upper Hudson, cedar-lined lakeshores near Newcomb, and the open views toward the High Peaks from Boreas Ponds. Lake Eaton, with canoes along the shore and Owl’s Head Mountain beyond, is another scene that can become especially striking in infrared.
These will be full photography days, but they will also be full learning days. Throughout the workshop, we’ll make time for image reviews, infrared processing guidance, and one-on-one help with composition, technique, and workflow.
We’ll head out for one final early morning session, then return for breakfast and checkout. Afterward, we’ll drive those returning home back to the airport for flights departing after 2:00 PM.
Shooting in infrared (IR) is an adventure. You can never quite picture what a given scene will look like in IR until you look through your viewfinder. This is because you're capturing wavelengths beyond what the eye can see. It's like looking into another world. We'll explore this world over the course of this workshop. Note that this workshop is dedicated to monochrome IR photography. No false colors, channel swapping, or other color techniques.
Whichever level you're at — whether you've got experience with IR photography or want to get started, we've got you covered. The Adirondacks in summer is truly an IR photographer's dream; there's an awesome variety of subjects and environments to photograph. We'll guide you to great locations and work with you to optimize your composition and settings. Back at the hotel, we'll review post-processing techniques for IR. It's important that you are using a converted camera. Yes, it is possible to put an IR filter on a "normal" camera, but this is a very frustrating way to shoot IR and results in inferior images. There are several options for converting a camera for IR as outlined in our blog post. If you still have questions, please contact us, and we'll be happy to help you.
