Alaska Wildlife: Eagles, Whales, and Glaciers Aboard Luxury Yacht Northern Song

UPDATE: As of July 24, 2019, this workshop is sold out. Please contact us to be put on the waiting list, thanks.

Southeast Alaska is a remarkable place. Historically, as the the northern end of the fabled Inside Passage, “Southeast” has long been an important travel corridor for Native peoples, and those seeking fortunes in fur and gold.  Culturally, it remains the ancestral homeland of the Tlingit people, whose traditional ways still permeate. Geologically, it is new land, still rebounding from the weight of retreating glaciers, and still largely defined by those that remain. Ecologically, Southeast’s lands are dominated by the Tongass National Forest, the largest in the United States, and containing much of the last temperate rainforest region left anywhere in the world.

The majority of the land in Southeast Alaska lies within 3 miles of the coastline—nowhere else is there such an intimate relationship between land and sea. Bald eagles—some 25% of the world’s total—fish for salmon and herring along Southeast’s waterways. Bears too, growing unusually large here on the local bounty. Humpback whales travel thousands of miles from their breeding grounds to feed in Southeast’s nutrient-rich waters, and killer whales, porpoise, seals, sea lions, and otters are all resident. It’s not just about the wildlife though! Expect to be awed by towering fjord walls, some of the planet’s last remaining tidewater glaciers, and plenty of blue ice. You may also get a chance to soak in one of Southeast’s natural hot springs, or try your hand at pulling up a halibut for dinner!

The best way to experience Southeast’s many marvels is by private ship. For this journey, you’ll join Andy Williams for nine days and eight nights aboard the M/V Northern Song, exploring the islands, waterways, and fjords between Sitka and Petersburg.  You’ll be traveling (and photographing!) through areas of extraordinary natural beauty by day, and anchoring up in quiet natural harbors at night, far from the commotion of busy cruise ship ports. Expect warm hospitality, comfortable accommodations, great food, and outstanding photographic opportunities! Andy will be working intensively with you on your wildlife photography and landscape photography techniques. He’ll have images reviews and post-processing sessions in the evenings as well. Expect to be immersed in photography all the time.

This is a very exclusive workshop. You’ll be joining a very small group—only 7 guests—of like-minded photographers and wildlife enthusiasts aboard one of the most outstanding small vessels in the region.

The photo opportunities couldn’t have been better. I particularly appreciated the training on catching the eagles from the boat before we went out in the skiffs. I appreciated Andy’s individual help during the photo shooting with settings, timing, and lens choices. I’m still sorting through pictures and it’s amazing how varied and special all the different opportunities were. I was just making a collection of close-ups of the icebergs. Unbelievable.
