Argentine Desert Photography Workshop

Cultural and Rural Deserts of the Argentinian Andes

March 8 – 13, 2026

  • Photograph stars in extremely dark nights over the desert
  • Meet artisans and learn about their culture
  • Spend time acclimating for the Andes Bolivian Salt Flats

Golden light spills across the colonial rooftops of Salta as the city slowly wakes up. In the distance, jagged cliffs rise from high-desert valleys, their layers of red, ochre and lavender a result of wind, water and time. This is northwestern Argentina, where culture and landscape collide in bold contrasts and subtle details, a photographer’s dream come true.

This workshop takes you deep into the heart of the region, from Salta’s cobblestone streets and historic facades to the wide open spaces of the Valles Calchaquíes. You’ll photograph colorful markets, vineyard lined valleys and surreal mountain landscapes – each day new opportunities to work with light, form and storytelling. Incredibly low light pollution allows for astrophotography under the southern hemisphere’s stars and the vast landscapes here are perfect for drone work, a fresh perspective on Argentina’s dramatic topography.

With a small group size and expert guidance from our pros, you’ll get personalized instruction in the field and during image reviews. We’ll cover long exposures and composition, working in mixed light and capturing authentic moments during cultural encounters. Whether it’s the intricate geometry of a weathered doorway or the grandeur of a desert canyon, we’ll help you find the shot and get it right.

The itinerary is designed to balance photographic depth with a smooth pace, allowing time for both exploration and learning. Accommodations are in colonial era lodgings that showcase the region’s history and a curated wine tasting highlights Salta’s high altitude vineyards – especially famous for their Torrontés.

This workshop also gently acclimates you to altitude, perfect as a lead-in to our Bolivia workshop if you want to continue your adventure.

Throughout the experience you’ll build a portfolio of this incredible region’s color, energy and texture. Whether you’re expanding your landscape work, honing your eye for detail or just looking for inspiration, this workshop will challenge and improve your photography in one of South America’s most photogenic places.

Itinerary

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

March 8, 2026: Welcome to Salta, Orientation at Local Hotel

Arrive in Salta, Argentina, by 5:00 PM for our meeting time at the local hotel.

March 9–10, 2026: From Salta to Cachi, Cuesta del Obispo Scenic Drive, Stay in Colonial Palace

We will depart from Salta to Cachi early, climbing the Cuesta del Obispo through the rain forest called Yungas. As we gain altitude, the landscape becomes more arid, and cacti frame the plateaus when we enter Los Cardones National Park. During our two nights in Cachi, we will stay in a classic colonial palace.

We’ll make multiple trips into the Cardones National Park to photograph the good light. We will also hold image reviews to be sure everyone is getting the images they are looking for.

March 11–12, 2026: Explore Los Cardones, Photographic Expeditions, Image Reviews in Cachi

After sunrise and breakfast, we head South to Seclantás, one of the most authentic towns in the Valley, where we will share the morning with local artisans. We will have lunch in the charming village of Molinos before getting to the incredible Quebrada de las Flechas landscape. We will then have dinner and spend the next two nights in Cafayate.

Vineyards are the region’s pride and create a magical color contrast with the valley’s reddish hue. We’ll spend time capturing this beautiful countryside. We will have lunch at a local winery and review photos during the afternoon. If the weather permits, we will take night shots.

March 13, 2026: Dawn in Cachi, Artisan Encounters in Seclantás, Lunch in Molinos

After a possible morning shoot and a hearty breakfast, we will return to Salta for a little rest and downtime before the next adventure heading north into Bolivia.

Cuba was an amazing workshop with Ceci. It was an eye-opening experience to understand the Cuban people and their culture. The humbleness of the Cuban people will forever be in my heart. I also enjoyed expanding my photo capabilities to "street photography"

Far exceeded my expectations. The Muench staff was great and helped make this an even better experience. (I'm talking about you, Jess!)

Joseph was great. He has very good leadership skills- attentive, good sense of humor, thinking ahead and planning. He is also a very good instructor- listening to questions, giving feedback / suggestions, and not just showing how to do a particular technique, but also why and when a person might use it.
