Bald Eagle Migration
January 7 – 13, 2024
1 Spot Left
Beginning in late October, thousands of bald eagles make their way down from the Yukon and northern British Columbia. Along the way, they’ll come to nest in the scenic Fraser Valley to mate and raise their young. It is the largest bald eagle migration in North America, and an unparalleled opportunity to capture eagles feeding, constructing nests, and tending to their chicks.
While eagles will be the focus of this workshop, they are far from the only highlight. Over the years we have seen and photographed the following common species at our locations: red–tailed Hawk, grebe, common goldeneye, wood duck, sandhill crane, great blue heron, green heron, Northern pintail, short–eared owl, bufflehead, common merganser, Snow goose, trumpeter swan, mute swan, rough–legged hawk, dunlin, Anna’s hummingbird, and great horned owl. Rarer sightings include: Pacific loon, red–throated loon, belted kingfisher, golden eagle, peregrine falcon, Virginia rail, common snipe, barn owl, barred owl, saw–whet owl, canvasback, and egret.
We will will teach you everything you need for a successful bird of prey shoot, from planning and positioning, to clothing and gear. You’ll also learn proper camera handling techniques and settings for optimizing your birds–in–flight shots, as well as ways to enhance your creativity in bird photography. We know birds, bird behavior, and bird photography and we will show you how learning your subject’s habits maximizes your number of “keeper” shots!

About the wildlife: This workshop offers significant opportunities for photographing wildlife, and while we do our best to maximize our wildlife encounters—based on past experiences, local knowledge, and the current conditions—we need to impress upon you that the wildlife really is wild and that we don’t control it.
This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
January 14, 2024: You will be picked up from the Vancouver airport or a local area hotel at 12:00 PM, then taken south of Vancouver to photograph migratory waterfowl and other birds that call this location home.
After our afternoon shooting we will check into our local hotel, followed by a group dinner to go over the rest of the week’s activities.
January 15–16, 2024: During these days we will be visiting previously scouted locations to photograph migratory waterfowl and birds of prey. Rough–Legged Hawks, Red–Tailed Hawks and Short–Eared Owls are likely subjects within and along the area’s various marshes and beaches. In the evening, we’ll hold an informal editing session to look at your photos and help you make adjustments for the coming days.
January 17, 2024: Today we’ll change venues and head farther inland to the area where the bald eagles occur. We will be visiting previously scouted locations to catch eagles hunting and at rest. At night we will conduct editing sessions to look at your photos and help you make adjustments to capture better photos in the coming days.
January 17–19, 2024: During these days we will be visiting all our scouted locations where the eagles traditionally hunt and rest. Expect to be out photographing eagles from 8:30 AM till 3:30 PM along the banks of various rivers, and in forested areas. During these nights, we will conduct formal night editing and photo review sessions in a boardroom.
January 20, 2024: We will check out of our hotel and head back to an area south of Vancouver to look for the owls and raptors that call this area home during the fall and winter season. After that, we will take you to the airport. Please schedule your departure for after 3:00PM.
