The Best of North Carolina's Scenic Waterfalls
October 22–27, 2022
The Blue Ridge Mountains are home to an astonishing number of waterfalls and the greatest variety of trees found anywhere in America. This incredible biodiversity means that fall brings an explosion of color in a huge variety of shades that is hard to rival anywhere else in the country. During this workshop we’ll explore some iconic locations and hidden gems at the height of the fall foliage when the colors are absolutely stunning and the dense mountain fog frequently rolls over the hills.
We will be based out of gorgeous Asheville, North Carolina which grants us central access to the surrounding region in all directions. This is a truly immersive workshop, and we will get up close and personal with many of these waterfalls to create powerful compositions while also focusing on the small details to reveal the location’s unique character. Be sure to bring your filters because we’ll be practicing our long exposure skills to create silky smooth images of the waterfalls. All of these skills from the field will come together in the classroom when we cover the special editing techniques that go into creating a masterful waterfall image.
October 22, 2022: Arrivals today into Asheville, North Carolina (AVN) anytime. Check into the hotel and join our first group dinner where we will have an orientation to discuss some of the technical skills and what to expect during the workshop.
October 23, 2022: We will wake up early in the morning for our first waterfall session. After a lunch break, we will hunt for beautiful fall foliage before heading to a gorgeous overlook for sweeping views at sunset.
October 24, 2022: We will start early in the morning and head to the breathtaking multi-terraced Catawba Falls which features a huge variety of compositions to explore. This is one of my all-time favorite locations in the fall and you will understand why the moment you see it. Plan to spend several hours exploring the limitless compositions this location has to offer! After lunch, we will have our first post-processing session to review what we have learned so far. At sunset we will head out to a lesser known, but beautiful waterfall. This time of year there is often beautiful fog rolling through the mountains, so hopefully we will catch some atmospheric conditions.
October 25, 2022: We will catch sunrise at a breathtaking gorge featuring multiple waterfalls and stunning fall foliage. After lunch, we will check out of our hotel and make the scenic drive south to Brevard where we will stay for the remainder of our workshop. Once we are settled in, we will head back out for a fun afternoon waterfall session.
October 26, 2022: Our morning begins with a beautiful hike through the forest to yet another incredible waterfall featuring multiple cascades. Come prepared to get a little wet because this hike features some fun stream crossings! After lunch, we will explore small scenes in the colorful forest before soaking in some panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the hopes of catching some fiery color in the sky.
October 27, 2022: At dawn we will chase our final gorgeous waterfall – an absolute gem completely encircled by breathtaking fall colors. Afterwards, we enjoy our final breakfast and bid farewell. The workshop concludes by 11:00 AM.
