The Best of North Carolina's Scenic Waterfalls

October 22 – 27, 2023

The Blue Ridge Mountains are home to an astonishing number of waterfalls and the greatest variety of trees found anywhere in America. This incredible biodiversity means that fall brings an explosion of color in a huge variety of shades that is hard to rival anywhere else in the country. During this workshop we’ll explore some iconic locations and hidden gems at the height of the fall foliage when the colors are absolutely stunning and the dense mountain fog frequently rolls over the hills.

We will be based out of gorgeous Asheville, North Carolina which grants us central access to the surrounding region in all directions. This is a truly immersive workshop, and we will get up close and personal with many of these waterfalls to create powerful compositions while also focusing on the small details to reveal the location’s unique character. Be sure to bring your filters because we’ll be practicing our long exposure skills to create silky smooth images of the waterfalls. All of these skills from the field will come together in the classroom when we cover the special editing techniques that go into creating a masterful waterfall image.

Itinerary

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

October 22, 2023: Arrivals today into Asheville, North Carolina (AVN) by 4:00 PM and transfer to our hotel in Little Switzerland. We’ll enjoy a nice dinner, followed by an orientation session where will will go over techniques for shooting waterfalls.

October 23, 2023: We will depart early to catch the sunrise at one of my favorite vistas overlooking the iconic rolling hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s a short uphill hike but well worth the reward! We will head to a lesser-known hidden gem waterfall in the afternoon before returning to our hotel for dinner and a sweeping sunset view.

October 24, 2023: We will start early in the morning and head to the breathtaking multi-terraced Catawba Falls, which features a huge variety of compositions to explore. This is one of my all-time favorite locations in the fall, and you will understand why the moment you see it. Plan to spend several hours exploring the limitless compositions this location has to offer! In the afternoon, we will head to another hidden beautiful waterfall before catching the sunset with a view on our way back to the hotel.

October 25, 2023: We will depart early for one of the best sunrise views in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The off-roading to reach this location ensures that we will likely have this sweeping vista all to ourselves! Following sunrise, we will return to the hotel to pack and change locations to Brevard to have easier access to new waterfalls. After checking into our hotel, we will depart to a tiny roadside treasure that you won’t believe is hidden in plain sight. If the conditions are right, we will catch a sunset reflection over a small lake before returning to our hotel.

October 26, 2023: After sunrise with an unbelievable view, we will head to a jaw-dropping private waterfall where we have secured private early entry to have it all to ourselves. This location is perfect for exploring grand and small scenes alike. Depending on the conditions, we may visit another waterfall or hunt for sunset views over the rolling hills in the afternoon.

October 27, 2023: We will shoot sunrise in the Pisgah National Forest and hopefully catch some gorgeous fog in the valley before heading to our final waterfall scene. This short morning hike has a very unique feature that makes it a fun location to shoot.
