African Photo Safari in Botswana

May 14 – 23, 2023

Join us for unparalleled wildlife photography on this small-group safari at two exclusive camps in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. At each camp, we’ll photograph from safari vehicles and also boats. Your own row in our safari vehicles will provide plenty of space for you and your equipment and allow unobstructed photography.

Learn what it’s like to pursue wildlife without stressing it, and become immersed in the experience so that you too can appreciate all the skills it takes to locate and compose wildlife photography in the wild. We expect to photograph lions, cheetah, leopards—and maybe even the rare white rhino! Photographing wildlife from a boat offers an excellent opportunity to create water-level compositions or capture incredible scenes of large herds of up to a thousand elephants.

At the private Kwara Reserve, each tent is nestled below tall forests with a private deck overlooking the expansive lagoon and floodplain. On the Kwando River, your tent will be nestled beneath towering ebony and marula trees with a view of the water. It’s common to see African wild dogs near the camp, even from your tent. Take a hot shower and enjoy a drink by the fire before dinner and just when you think the day is done, be ready to explore the bush at night and photograph predators hunting.

Our camps offer Muench-style comfort, with all the expected amenities: fantastic food, luxurious accommodations with en-suite facilities, and hot showers. Expect to be immersed in photography and safari from before sunrise until after sunset. Learn from the pro while positioning the vehicle or maneuvering the boats to find the perfect background for each specific encounter. Then follow up with a one-on-one review of your images at night by the fire.

Come join us on this safari of a lifetime.

About the wildlife: This workshop offers significant opportunities for photographing wildlife, and while we do our best to maximize our wildlife encounters—based on past experiences, local knowledge, and the current conditions—we need to impress upon you that the wildlife really is wild and that we don’t control it.

May 14, 2023: Arrive this day in Maun, Botswana and you’ll be escorted to our hotel for check-in and group dinner.

May 15–19, 2023:

Enjoy a leisurly morning at our hotel. Randy will look at your camera equipment, review camera settings and shooting techniques, and provide more details about what to expect. After an early light lunch we are off to the airport to catch our first bush flight into the Okavango River Delta. Within minutes of landing at our airstrip, we are on safari.

For the next four nights, we will be based at Kwara Camp, located inside the Kwando Concession, deep inside the Okavango River Delta. We’ll be up before sunrise each day, greeted with a cup of hot coffee or tea and a light snack, then head out on our morning game drive. We’ll stay out as long as we can, returning to camp for late breakfast or brunch. Some days we’ll bring breakfast with us for a safari meal under the shade of towering ebony trees. We’ll be back to camp for lunch and a short rest, with enough time to download images from the morning. Then we’ll be off to photograph from a boat or vehicle until the sun sets. On certain nights, be prepared to photograph predators hunting in the dark. Guides will use spotlights that are designed not to blind the wildlife yet are bright enough to allow us to photograph them.

May 19–23, 2023: On our last morning here, we’ll have a morning game drive, breakfast, and then a short thirty minute flight to our next camp.

Although we are still in the Kwando Concession, Lagoon Camp has a completely different look and feel than our previous camp. Located in the northwestern area of the concession, the camp is perched on the banks of the wild Kwando River, nestled beneath towering ebony and marula trees. Lagoon Camp has a well-earned reputation for big game with large herds of elephant and buffalo attracting the attention of large predators. A Painted African Wild Dog pack usually has a den close to the camp, providing excellent viewing and photo opportunities.

For the next four days we will follow the same schedule as we did at our previous camp, up early in the morning and staying out late into the afternoon. Be prepared to spend as much time as needed when it comes to capturing great images. We’ll make time for downloads and image reviews along the way.

May 23, 2023: We have time for a morning game drive and a hearty breakfast before packing up for our flights back to Maun. We’ll all fly together to Maun, in time to connect to their 2:30PM flight to (JNB) Johannesburg

Safari Camp Life–What To Expect

In short, you'll feel like you're in a luxury hotel! We've handpicked both camps for comfort, knowledgeable and friendly staff, great food, and convenience to our main objective, the wildlife. We also place considerable value on isolation and exclusivity. You won't find us in areas where there are dozens of other vehicles at a sighting—you'll feel like you own the land, and the animals are there just for you! Typical tented accommodations feature twin beds or queen bed, high thread-count linens, storage for clothing, sitting area, verandah, and of course en suite bathrooms, with toilets, hot water, and showers. They are enormous in size, bright, open, and airy.

Our days start early before sunrise. We'll have a quick coffee or tea, maybe a cookie, and off on our first game drive of the day. The animals are just starting to stir as the day begins, and we want to be there, and in the best light. We'll stay out for a few to several hours, depending on the sightings. After a mid-drive coffee break, we'll continue on until mid to late morning. We typically have breakfast in the field to maximize our game-viewing and photographing time. Back in camp, it's time for offloading cards, one-on-one instruction, or just taking time to relax and do nothing. Read a book, take a walk, or take a nap and recharge. Of course, there will be lunch, and then In the mid to late afternoon, we'll again head out for another game drive, chasing the best sightings. Enjoying your favorite drink while watching and photographing the sunset is a popular activity. Arrive back at camp after sundown, enjoy a hot shower if you like, and then join us by the campfire or in the living area for cocktails followed by dinner.

Food in our camps is superb—you'll be served both dishes you know and local specialties, too. Of course any dietary needs can be accommodated. We've arranged for the best safari vehicles—custom Land Cruisers which feature ample room for you and your gear, and excellent visibility. And only one photographer per row of seats (note that front seat next to the driver counts as a row). All of our camps feature optional daily laundry service (but not on days we travel in between camps).

Why a Muench Workshops Safari?

We know you have choices, and yes, you can spend less on another Safari. Our aim is to give you the best possible experience, maximizing your time and minimizing the hassle, while providing the best photographic experience and instruction available anywhere.

Photography and Safari Guiding: We've personally chosen only the best local safari guides for this photographic safari.

Details Matter: Our itinerary is carefully set to bring you the best game viewing and all that the region offers. We arrange things so that we're in areas that are not overly crowded with many other safari vehicles, and we get off-road when possible so we can get close to the action and our subjects.

Photography Instruction: This is a workshop, not just a tour. We will work hard on this safari, with instruction in the field and in camp. Many evenings feature critiques and post-processing instruction after dinner, and during the daytime we offer one-on-one instruction as needed. You'll come away with a wealth of new knowledge not only on how to create great imagery but how best to process those images in Lightroom and Photoshop.

Years of Experience—Happy Repeat Customers: We've been leading, guiding and teaching photographers for a long time—and we have thrilled customers who come back on our workshops again and again to prove it. If you'd like to speak to someone who has been with us on a workshop or safari, just let us know, we'd be happy to arrange a phone call.

Easy: You must be able to get in and out of the safari vehicles, be able to ride in the vehicles on bumpy tracks, and handle carrying your own gear.

“This was my first workshop but will not be my last. The workshop surpassed my expectations, which were fairly high to start with. Randy Hanna was an outstanding workshop leader and he went to great lengths to find appropriate locations for our photo shoots and I found his critique sessions especially valuable. ”
