Botswana Safari Photography Workshop

African Photo Safari in Botswana's Okavango Delta

June 20 – 30, 2026

  • Search for wild dogs as they stalk prey through the waterways
  • As dry season begins, the Okavango Delta attracts abundant wildlife
  • One guest per safari vehicle row—nobody between you and the wildlife

SMALL GROUP – 6 guests + 1 photographic leader

Join us for unparalleled wildlife photography on this small-group safari at two exclusive Botswana’s Okavango Delta camps plus the opportunity to spend two days with the meerkats in the Kalahari. We’ll photograph from safari vehicles and boats while in the delta. Your own row in our safari vehicles will provide plenty of space for you and your equipment and allow unobstructed photography.

Learn what it’s like to pursue wildlife without stressing it, and become immersed in the experience so that you, too, can appreciate all the skills it takes to locate and compose wildlife photography in the wild. We expect to photograph lions, leopards, wild dogs—and even the rare roan antelope! Photographing wildlife from a boat offers an excellent opportunity to create water-level compositions or capture incredible scenes of large herds of up to a thousand elephants. You’ll have the opportunity to spend time with the very friendly meerkats in the Kalahari desert. They love to hunt scorpions in the morning hours.

Our camps offer Muench Workshops-style comfort with all the expected amenities: fantastic food, luxurious accommodations with en-suite facilities, and hot showers. Expect to be immersed in photography and safari from sunrise until sunset. Learn from the pro while positioning the vehicle or maneuvering the boats to find the perfect background for each specific encounter. Then follow up with a one-on-one review of your images at night by the fire.

Join us on this safari of a lifetime!

Your Pro

Itinerary

About the wildlife: This workshop offers significant opportunities for photographing wildlife, and while we do our best to maximize our wildlife encounters—based on past experiences, local knowledge, and the current conditions—we need to impress upon you that the wildlife really is wild and that we don’t control it.

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

June 20, 2026: Arrive in Maun, Transfer by Bush Plane to Kanana Camp

Arrive this day in Maun, Botswana, and we’ll escort you to our bush plane to take everyone to our first safari camp. You will arrive at camp with time to settle in and spend time with your pro to discuss and review your safari.

For the following four nights, we’re on safari in the southwest region of the Okavango River Delta at the Kanana camp.

June 21–24, 2026: Morning Game Drives, Evening Wildlife Photography, Kanana Camp Okavango Delta

We’re up early before sunrise and are greeted with a cup of hot coffee or tea, a small snack, and then we head out on our morning game drive. The NG27 concession is in the heart of the Okavango Delta and covers around 400 km² in the western Okavango. This well-known private concession at the head of the Xudum River is on the western boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve. The concession offers the full range of Delta habitats from wide open floodplains with tiny palm filled islands, waterlogged marshes to forests of splendid riverine trees such as Sausage trees, Leadwoods and Jackalberries.

Giraffe, zebra, blue wildebeest, red lechwe, impala and elephant are all common along with lion and spotted hyena. Leopard particularly enjoy the woodland habitats of the Pom Pom Concession and wild dog are sometimes spotted. The area is known for its water-birds but there is an abundance of raptors such as bateleur and martial eagles. Birding is best in the wetter months although you will find a wide range of dry-land species and aquatic birds in this concession. Bee eaters, kingfishers, squacco herons and slaty egrets are amongst some of the birds that can be seen here.

Each night, we’ll spend more time reviewing the images captured on safari that day or enjoying the views from our private deck after a hearty meal prepared by experienced chefs.

June 24–27, 2026: Transition from Kanana to Shinde Camp, Afternoon Safari

A short flight to our new camp tucked away in the northeast corner of Botswana’s Okavango Delta.  We’ll arrive at our camp for lunch and a quick rest. Then it’s time to head out on safari again. Shinde’s excellent location ensures a combination of permanent water access for year-round water activities and large dry areas for game drive routes. This blend of environments provides the habitat for a consistently wide variety of wildlife, including the elusive sitatunga antelope and a healthy population of leopards. We’ll follow a similar photo safari schedule with an early wake-up coffee, tea, and snack, followed by our morning game drive. We’ll go out in a boat or our safari vehicles every afternoon for more wildlife photography. The days will be filled with photography and discussions of composition, post-processing, and stories of our adventures.

Each night, we’ll spend more time reviewing the images captured on safari that day or enjoying the views from our private deck after a hearty meal prepared by experienced chefs.

June 28–29, 2026: Explore Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Meet Meerkats and San Bushmen at Camp Kalahari

After a short flight to camp Kalahari, we’ll settle in and become acquainted with the unusual environment of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans desert. This is a simple and relaxed camp adjacent to two amazing encounters. We have arranged two visits to spend quality time with the meerkats on both mornings. You will also be able to visit the San bushman and join them on a short walk to experience this amazing land through their eyes.

On the second day following the encounter with the meerkats, you’ll have a bit of time for breakfast and to pack up for flights back to Maun.

June 30, 2026: Final Meerkat Encounter, Return Flights from Camp Kalahari to Maun

This morning, we will encounter the meerkats for the second time before having our last hearty breakfast in the bush. Our flights back to Maun will depart around 11:00 AM. We’ll all fly together to Maun, where everyone can connect with their regular flights back to Johannesburg.

There is no escaping the fact that Muench Workshops is more expensive than most. But I feel that I get what I pay for. You take great care of your guests.

I definitely saw improvements in my photography over the course of the workshop, so I think that speaks to the tips, tricks, and instruction I was receiving along the way.

As previously mentioned, Richard Bernabe is very knowledgeable about photography and has a very personable teaching style, which I greatly appreciated. As an educator, I admired his ability to provide instruction that matched everyone's individual ability level. I know that I learned a lot from Richard and could tell from seeing other group members' pictures, their photographic skills had improved as well.

Behind the Scenes

Safari Camp Life—What To Expect

In short, you'll feel like you're in a luxury hotel! We've handpicked both camps for comfort, knowledgeable and friendly staff, great food, and convenience to our main objective, the wildlife. We also place considerable value on isolation and exclusivity. You won't find us in areas where dozens of other vehicles are at a sighting—you'll feel like you own the land, and the animals are there just for you! Typical tented accommodations feature twin beds or a queen bed, high thread-count linens, storage for clothing, a sitting area, a verandah, and of course, en-suite bathrooms with toilets, hot water, and showers. They are enormous in size, bright, open, and airy.

Our days start early, before sunrise. We'll have a quick coffee or tea, maybe a cookie, and off on our first game drive of the day. The animals start to stir as the day begins, and we want to be there in the best light. Depending on the sightings, we'll stay out for a few to several hours. After a mid-drive coffee break, we'll continue until mid to late morning. We typically have breakfast in the field to maximize our game-viewing and photographing time. Back in camp, it's time for offloading cards, one-on-one instruction, or just relaxing and doing nothing. Read a book, take a walk, or take a nap and recharge. Of course, there will be lunch, and then In the mid to late afternoon, we'll again head out for another game drive, chasing the best sightings. Enjoying your favorite drink while watching and photographing the sunset is popular. Arrive back at camp after sundown, enjoy a hot shower if you like, and then join us by the campfire or in the living area for cocktails, followed by dinner.

Food in our camps is superb—you'll be served both dishes you know and local specialties, too. Of course, any dietary needs can be accommodated. We've arranged for the best safari vehicles—custom Land Cruisers that feature ample room for you and your gear and excellent visibility. And only one photographer per row of seats (note that the front seat next to the driver counts as a row). Our camps feature optional daily laundry service (but not on days we travel between camps).

Why a Muench Workshops Safari?

We know you have choices, and yes, you can spend less on another Safari. We aim to give you the best possible experience, maximizing your time and minimizing the hassle while providing the best photographic experience and instruction available anywhere.

Photography and Safari Guiding: We've personally chosen only the best local safari guides for this photographic safari.

Details Matter: Our itinerary is set to bring you the best game viewing and all the region offers. We arrange things so that we're in areas that are not overly crowded with many other safari vehicles, and we get off-road when possible so we can get close to the action and our subjects.

Photography Instruction: This is a workshop, not just a tour. We will work hard on this safari, with instruction in the field and camp. Many evenings feature image reviews and post-processing instruction after dinner, and during the daytime, we offer one-on-one instruction as needed. You'll come away with a wealth of new knowledge on creating fantastic imagery and how best to process those images in Lightroom and Photoshop.

Years of Experience—Happy Repeat Customers: We've been leading, guiding, and teaching photographers for a long time—and we have thrilled customers who come back on our workshops again and again to prove it. If you'd like to speak to someone who has been with us on a workshop or safari, just let us know, we'd be happy to arrange a phone call.

Fitness

Easy: You must be able to get in and out of the safari vehicles, ride in the vehicles on bumpy tracks, and handle carrying your gear.
