As first light moves across the Okavango Delta, it catches ripples on a glassy channel and lifts mist off the reeds. Elephants walk in single file, and water beads on their backs. On the edge of a floodplain, lions move through pale grasses while fish eagles call over the wetlands. Later, under a clear Kalahari sky, a family of meerkats emerges to warm up and start the day’s hunt. It’s slow, intimate, and rewards patience.
This workshop is based at two private camps in the Okavango Delta with dedicated time at a habituated meerkat colony in the Kalahari. In the Delta, we photograph from both vehicles and boats to work at eye level with wildlife, capturing clean waterline compositions. You will have your own row in the vehicle, which will provide ample space for you and your gear, plus an unobstructed view in any direction. On the water, we get low angles and quiet approaches for different perspectives on elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife. We will track predators with experienced guides and look for opportunities with lions, leopards, and wild dogs.
Instruction is hands-on in the field. With this small group, you will get individual guidance on exposure, autofocus, panning, backlighting, and managing contrast at sunrise and sunset. We will also work on thoughtful portraiture that shows behavior, layering subjects into their habitat when the scene calls for it.
Days are full and focused. We plan each outing around light, weather, water levels, and animal movement. From positioning the vehicle for clean backgrounds to setting up a stable platform on the boat, it’s all about making purposeful decisions that improve each image. Camps are comfortable with en-suite rooms, good food, and hot showers, so you can rest well and be ready for first light.
You will leave with a strong portfolio from two of Africa’s most incredible ecosystems: dynamic predator encounters, water level scenes, and close behavioral moments with meerkats in the open desert. Just as important, you will have skills in anticipating wildlife behavior, mastering autofocus and exposure under changing conditions, working efficiently from vehicles and boats, and a consistent natural post-processing approach that lets the images speak for themselves.
About the wildlife: This workshop offers significant opportunities for photographing wildlife, and while we do our best to maximize our wildlife encounters—based on past experiences, local knowledge, and the current conditions—we need to impress upon you that the wildlife really is wild and that we don’t control it.
This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
Arrive this day in Maun, Botswana, and we’ll escort you to our bush plane to take everyone to our first safari camp. You will arrive at camp with time to settle in and spend time with your pro to discuss and review your safari.
For the following four nights, we’re on safari in the Okavango River Delta at Shinde Camp.
We’re up early before sunrise and are greeted with a cup of hot coffee or tea, a small snack, and then we head out on our morning game drive. We’ll stay out as long as possible, returning to camp for late breakfast or brunch. Shinde’s excellent location in the Okavango Delta ensures a combination of permanent water access for year-round water activities and large dry areas for game drive routes. This blend of environments provides the habitat for a consistently wide variety of wildlife, including the elusive sitatunga antelope and a healthy population of leopards.
Some days we bring breakfast for a safari meal under the towering ebony trees. We’ll be back to camp for lunch and a short rest, with enough time to download images from the morning. Then we’ll be off to photograph from a boat or vehicle until the sun sets.
On our last morning here, we’ll have a morning game drive, breakfast, and then a short thirty-minute flight to our next camp.
A short flight to Kanana Camp. We’ll follow a similar photo safari schedule with an early wake-up coffee, tea, and snack, followed by our morning game drive. We’ll go out in a boat or our safari vehicles every afternoon for more wildlife photography. The days will be filled with photography and discussions of composition, post-processing, and stories of our adventures.
The NG27 concession is in the heart of the Okavango Delta and covers around 400 km² in the western Okavango. This well-known private concession at the head of the Xudum River is on the western boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve. The concession offers the full range of Delta habitats from wide open floodplains with tiny palm filled islands, waterlogged marshes to forests of splendid riverine trees such as Sausage trees, Leadwoods and Jackalberries.
Giraffe, zebra, blue wildebeest, red lechwe, impala and elephant are all common along with lion and spotted hyena. Leopard particularly enjoy the woodland habitats of the Pom Pom Concession and wild dog are sometimes spotted. The area is known for its water-birds but there is an abundance of raptors such as bateleur and martial eagles. Birding is best in the wetter months although you will find a wide range of dry-land species and aquatic birds in this concession. Bee eaters, kingfishers, squacco herons and slaty egrets are amongst some of the birds that can be seen here.
Each night, we’ll spend more time reviewing the images captured on safari that day or enjoying the views from our private deck after a hearty meal prepared by experienced chefs.
You’ll arrive at Camp Kalahari after a short flight. The drive to camp is brief where you’ll have plenty of time to settle in.
Camp Kalahari is in the heart of the great Kalahari. Set amongst the waving palms and acacia trees of Brown Hyena Island, the tents are an ideal base for discovering the charms of the desert and the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, a landscape that’s as surreal as it is sublime, and as mysterious as it is magical. You’ll be here two nights to spend the mornings with the. You’ll photograph zebra and wildebeest as they migrate through the area, elephants at the swimming pool and more.
Both mornings we’ll head out early to experience and photograph the meerkats. This is an incredible opportunity to watch these amazing animal in it’s environment often hunting and eating scorpians.
After two nights here it will be time to head back to Maun.
This morning, we will encounter the meerkats for the second time before our last hearty breakfast in the bush. Our flights back to Maun will depart around 11:00 AM. We’ll all fly together to Maun, where everyone can connect with the regular flights back to Johannesburg that board around 2:00 PM.
In short, you'll feel like you're in a luxury hotel! We've handpicked both camps for comfort, knowledgeable and friendly staff, great food, and convenience to our main objective, the wildlife. We also place considerable value on isolation and exclusivity. You won't find us in areas where dozens of other vehicles are at a sighting—you'll feel like you own the land, and the animals are there just for you! Typical tented accommodations feature twin beds or a queen bed, high thread-count linens, storage for clothing, a sitting area, a verandah, and of course, en-suite bathrooms with toilets, hot water, and showers. They are enormous in size, bright, open, and airy.
Our days start early, before sunrise. We'll have a quick coffee or tea, maybe a cookie, and off on our first game drive of the day. The animals start to stir as the day begins, and we want to be there in the best light. Depending on the sightings, we'll stay out for a few to several hours. After a mid-drive coffee break, we'll continue until mid to late morning. We typically have breakfast in the field to maximize our game-viewing and photographing time. Back in camp, it's time for offloading cards, one-on-one instruction, or just relaxing and doing nothing. Read a book, take a walk, or take a nap and recharge. Of course, there will be lunch, and then In the mid to late afternoon, we'll again head out for another game drive, chasing the best sightings. Enjoying your favorite drink while watching and photographing the sunset is popular. Arrive back at camp after sundown, enjoy a hot shower if you like, and then join us by the campfire or in the living area for cocktails, followed by dinner.
Food in our camps is superb—you'll be served both dishes you know and local specialties, too. Of course, any dietary needs can be accommodated. We've arranged for the best safari vehicles—custom Land Cruisers that feature ample room for you and your gear and excellent visibility. And only one photographer per row of seats (note that the front seat next to the driver counts as a row). Our camps feature optional daily laundry service (but not on days we travel between camps).

We know you have choices, and yes, you can spend less on another Safari. We aim to give you the best possible experience, maximizing your time and minimizing the hassle while providing the best photographic experience and instruction available anywhere.
Photography and Safari Guiding: We've personally chosen only the best local safari guides for this photographic safari.
Details Matter: Our itinerary is set to bring you the best game viewing and all the region offers. We arrange things so that we're in areas that are not overly crowded with many other safari vehicles, and we get off-road when possible so we can get close to the action and our subjects.
Photography Instruction: This is a workshop, not just a tour. We will work hard on this safari, with instruction in the field and camp. Many evenings feature image reviews and post-processing instruction after dinner, and during the daytime, we offer one-on-one instruction as needed. You'll come away with a wealth of new knowledge on creating fantastic imagery and how best to process those images in Lightroom and Photoshop.
Years of Experience—Happy Repeat Customers: We've been leading, guiding, and teaching photographers for a long time—and we have thrilled customers who come back on our workshops again and again to prove it. If you'd like to speak to someone who has been with us on a workshop or safari, just let us know, we'd be happy to arrange a phone call.
Easy: You must be able to get in and out of the safari vehicles, ride in the vehicles on bumpy tracks, and handle carrying your gear.
