Colorado Alpine Wildflowers Photography Workshop

Colorful Landscapes in the Heart of the Rocky Mountains

July 7 – 12, 2026

  • Rugged peaks contrast with vibrant wildflower meadows and hidden lakes
  • Fully outfitted camping for unparalleled access to remote locations
  • Learn focus stacking, shutter speed blending, and lighting nightscapes

High in southwestern Colorado, the San Juan Mountains rise in jagged ranks of 13,000- and 14,000-foot peaks, wrapped in alpine tundra, clear streams, and meadows glowing with summer wildflowers. July paints the landscape in a riot of colorful flowers—from columbine and lupine to paintbrush and fireweed—set against snow-capped summits and endless western skies. Historic mining relics punctuate the valleys, adding texture and storytelling to every scene.

Our days are about remote access and artistry. Using 4×4 vehicles to reach high passes and quiet basins, and then continuing on short hikes, we’ll place you where light and weather meet the terrain to make memorable photographs. Expect a mix of grand mountain scenes, intimate landscape details, and evocative studies of weathered structures. When skies cooperate, we head out after dark to photograph under the Milky Way, creating clean, powerful images that feel both wild and timeless. A fully outfitted high-alpine camp brings us even closer to first light and last light, adding serenity to the experience and precious time on location.

Learning is a constant throughout this workshop, with focused practice on techniques such as focus stacking, night sky photography, near/far composition, exposure bracketing, and more, where appropriate. We will work beside you to develop your photographic vision and help you see in exciting and fresh perspectives, teaching you lasting skills in composition, camera techniques, and post-processing that will improve your photography long after the workshop.

Image reviews and focused post-processing sessions help you refine each photograph so it carries the depth and emotion you felt on the mountain.

You’ll leave with more than a portfolio—you’ll come away with memories of time spent in one of the most beautiful landscapes in the United States.

Itinerary

This workshop requires that you are capable of reaching an altitude of over 12,000 feet. We will be camping in tents at this altitude, so you should spend a night or two acclimating in Colorado somewhere at an altitude of 7-8,000 feet before the beginning of the workshop. Please get in touch with us for ideas of where to visit before the workshop.

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

July 7, 2026: Meetup at Hotel and Head Out for Photography

Meet at 2:00 PM inside the Grand Imperial Hotel in Silverton, Colorado. We’ll have an early dinner tonight, where we’ll brief you on how to prepare for our first evening shoot. We will leave Silverton and head up the canyon searching for wildflowers and high mountain peaks. If the weather cooperates, we will stay out late and shoot into the night—this time of year is ideal for capturing the galactic center of the Milky Way!

July 8–10, 2026: High-Altitude Alpine Camp Setup, Starlit Mining Camps and Milky Way

We’ll head up in our jeeps this morning to our outfitted alpine camp. Camp is at 11,850 feet in altitude and contains one large dinner tent, four large double tents tall enough to stand in, cots, pads, and sleeping bags. We’ll have time to settle into our tents and enjoy some hot food. Our time will be filled with photography, and we’ll work to find intimate photographs and grand vistas. Our nights will involve learning lighting techniques for abandoned mining camp buildings with the stars as a backdrop. Of course, we will photograph the incredible snow-capped mountain peaks with the Milky Way behind them!

There will occasionally be short hikes up to two miles from the jeeps, but nothing too steep or rugged. We will take our time but be advised we’ll be at a high elevation (up to 13,000 feet). Acclimation before the workshop may be necessary for some participants traveling from homes near sea level.

July 10–11, 2026: Rocky Mountain Image Processing, Late Light Photography in Silverton

After returning from our alpine camp, we’ll enjoy the comfortable Grand Imperial Hotel in Silverton. We’ll have time to post-process our images of the Rocky Mountains. After some time spent reviewing and processing, and if conditions are good, we’ll photograph late light and possibly more stars. We will also have two other canyons to explore during our last full day at Silverton. We’ll look for more wildflowers and possibly stars in the evening.

July 12, 2026: Final Image Review and Farewell Breakfast at the Grand Imperial

After breakfast, we will have a last image review session to enjoy the fantastic images we captured throughout the week. The workshop concludes at noon, after which you can return to local airports and home. We will help you arrange a ride. Just let us know.

This location was spectacular. The word beautiful isn't strong enough. And the food! Who would expect steaks on a camping trip? You need to keep those guys...they were great.

The roads to get to some of these places were quite challenging and the driving they did was very much appreciated. I would never been able to experience these beautiful places otherwise!

Even if you consider yourself a beginning photographer, you don't have to feel intimidated by a Muench Workshops trip. I watched the recommended videos and was able to practice some of the Lightroom and Photoshop techniques prior to the workshop. The instructors met me at my level and I learned a lot and had a lot of fun in amazingly beautiful places.

Behind the Scenes

Camping in a high alpine location

You will stay in the historic town of Silverton, Colorado, for several nights. But you will also spend two nights in tents at 11,800 feet. The camp is fully outfitted with tents, cots, pads, and sleeping bags. You will share a tent with another person, but the tents are large enough to stand in and have sufficient space for two cots. There is a gear vestibule that makes a lovely porch as well. It's best to be prepared for this altitude. If you do not know how you handle the altitude, or even if you do, it's best to arrive in Durango a few days early and spend some time at 8,000 feet. There are plenty of places to visit in this area, and we are more than happy to recommend some sights.

Fitness

Moderate: You should be able to do short hikes up to two miles in an alpine environment at elevations up to 13,000 feet.
