Colors of Provence and Camargue Photography Workshop

Vibrant lavender fields and the majestic wild horses of the Camargue

June 30 – July 6, 2026

  • A celebration of nature, culture, and the simple pleasures of life
  • Carpets of lavender, cobblestone streets, rustic stone houses
  • Majestic white horses in lagoons, marshes, and the beach

Summer in Provence is a feast for the senses. Lavender waves roll across the hills, golden sun warms the stone villages, and the scent of thyme fills the air. This workshop is the essence of southern France at its most radiant, from the wild horses of the Camargue to the peaceful beauty of the Valensole Plateau and Luberon Valley.

Lavender is the soul of Provence, and we’ll have private access to fields at their peak. Here, early and late light reveals leading lines, textures, and shapes that turn simple rows into graphic compositions. Between these quiet moments, we’ll explore hillside villages where time stands still and soak up the atmosphere, wandering narrow village streets awash with colour.

In the Camargue, we shift from serenity to motion. With local horsemen, we’ll photograph the region’s famous white horses galloping through shallow lagoons and open marshes. Each session is timed to perfection for the best light, teaching techniques for capturing movement, exposure, and anticipation with style and precision.

Expect to be fully immersed throughout with focused sessions on urban landscape, clean and balanced compositions in the lavender fields, and mastering shutter speed for your action shots of the famous white horses. We’ll help you develop clearer intent and stronger execution, refining your composition, camera settings, and post-processing techniques so your photography continues to grow long after the workshop ends.

Evenings are spent over local food and wine, soaking up the region’s warmth and rhythm.

This is Provence as photographers dream it: full of colour, steeped in history, and light that invites you to slow down, observe, and create images that linger long after you get home.

Itinerary

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

June 30, 2026: Arrival at Nice, Local Dining Experience

Arrive at Nice Côte d’Azur airport today and transfer to our seafront hotel near the old Port of Nice. We’ll meet here this afternoon for introductions and an overview of the week ahead before heading out to dinner at a local restaurant.

July 1, 2026: Sunrise in Menton, Medieval Entrevaux, Sunset at Moustiers Sainte Marie

Up early this morning to travel the short distance to the picturesque border town of Menton to photograph the pastel-colored houses and basilica overlooking the old port as the sun rises. We’ll return to our hotel for breakfast, and after check-out, we’ll head north to the medieval citadel town of Entrevaux in the Var valley, walking the quiet streets before lunch. We’ll then drive through the dramatic Gorge du Verdon, the deepest river canyon in France. stopping at a number of viewpoints along the way. We’ll arrive at Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, one of the most beautiful villages in France, in the late afternoon. Built into the side of a mountain, the village is illuminated at dusk, making for spectacular sunset photography. We stay here for the next two nights.

July 2, 2026: Lavender Dawn at Valensole, Historic Moustiers Exploration, Sunset Photography

We’ll photograph sunrise at one of the best-kept lavender fields of the Valensole Plateau, a short drive away. We have private access to this lavender farm, which is normally off-limits to the public. After breakfast, we’ll explore the old streets of Moustiers, heading uphill towards the 12th-century chapel of Notre Dame de Beauvoir for views over the village and surrounding countryside. During the heat of the day, we’ll spend some time reviewing and editing our images and venture out again later for an afternoon shoot, dinner, and sunset shoot over more lavender and wheat fields on the Plateau.

July 3, 2026: Provençal Village Charm, Wild Photography in Camargue, First Horse Session

After another sunrise shoot in the lavender, we check out this morning and drive leisurely through the scenic Luberon Valley towards the Camargue, a regional park that lies on the Mediterranean Sea and straddles the Rhone River delta. It is home to a remarkable variety of birdlife and the wild white horses we have come here to photograph. On the way, we will stop at a quiet but typical medieval Provençal village with its terracotta tiled rooftops, stone fountains, colorful window shutters, old doors, and summer flowers among narrow winding streets. We’ll arrive in the Camargue in the late afternoon and check into our lodgings, where we will prepare you for the next three days of some of the most fantastic photography sessions you will ever experience—the Camargue horses. Our first photo session here is this evening.

July 4–5, 2026: Capturing Camargue Horses’ Play, Flamingo Photography, Gypsy Flamenco Night

Over these two days, we will photograph the Camargue horses running and playing in marshes, on the beach, and galloping through the water of a shallow lagoon in the early morning and evening. Between the photography sessions, we will review your images to help you create better images each time we visit the ranches. We’ll also visit a nearby ornithological park to photograph the large flock (technically a “flamboyance”) of pink flamingos that is resident here. For our last evening, we’ll be entertained at our hotel by local Camargue gypsy musicians and their unique brand of lively flamenco guitar.

July 6, 2026: Final Horse Photography, Departure from Nice

A final session with the horses on a nearby lagoon beach before breakfast and check-out. We’ll drive back to Nice this morning, from where onward travels can be made anytime after 4:00 PM.

Behind the Scenes

Camargue Horses

Photographing the Camargue horses is an exhilarating experience, and a little preparation will go a long way toward achieving great results from all of the sessions we'll be enjoying.

Prior to our first shoot, we'll be helping you set up your camera in a way that is best suited to capturing the horses as they gallop toward us or across our field of view. Telephoto zoom lenses such as 70-200mm and 100-400mm are ideal for this photography. We'll work through exposure settings using Auto ISO, the importance of ensuring correct depth of field at longer focal lengths, shutter speed selection, how best to use the focus mode options on your camera, and how to approach the composition of a moving subject.

If you are interested in practicing the techniques involved before traveling to France, we can offer you some practical advice on how to do so. Just let us know if you'd like some help!

Photographing the Lavender Fields

When photographing the carpets of lavender stretching away from us into the distance, we'll be standing very close to the flowers, so it's likely we will want to produce a series of focus-stacked images to ensure the front-to-back sharpness of our final photograph. For those unfamiliar with the technique of focus stacking, we'll spend time the night before our first sunrise shoot in the lavender fields to run through the process, both in-camera and manually, so that your camera can be set up and you're ready to go the next day. During our first image review we'll then show you how to combine those stacked images in Photoshop to produce the final result.
