Snow Covered Dolomite Mountains

The Dolomites are a range of jagged mountains located in northeastern Italy. They form a part of the Southern Limestone Alps and extend from the River Adige in the west to the Piave Valley in the east. Join Muench Workshops for a seven-night winter journey through one of the most scenic and photogenic regions in Europe.

We’ll stay at a combination of hotels and rifugios within the ski resorts to access the best photography locations within these mountains. The huts—called rifugi, or rifugios—vary in their degree of luxury, but all provide a cozy bunk, plenty of warm blankets, and a toasty fire. You can count on warm camaraderie, a great night’s sleep, whether we’re in a Refugio or hotel.

You’ll be expertly guided by Muench Workshops co-founder Marc Muench, and local guide Luka Esenko. Both are veteran landscape photographers who will share their tips and techniques for capturing the magic and tradition of this region. Expect breathtaking vistas, a variety of atmospheric conditions, and plenty to photograph! Throughout the workshop, you’ll learn about correct exposure, focusing, camera settings, focus stacking for sharpness throughout an entire scene, how to use neutral density and polarizing filters, and much more.

A reasonable level of fitness is required for this trip—you will be walking around in mountainous regions with occasional ice and deep snow. You’ll be spending time out in the snow and cold to capture stunning images of these beautiful mountains.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect as this was my first travel photography workshop. But it was truly beyond my expectations! I was most impressed with the professionalism and helpful attitude by Marc Muench.

Itinerary and General Information

January 20, 2021: Arrive in Venice this morning. At 11:00 AM, we’ll meet in our hotel near Venice airport to board our vans. We’ll make the two-hour drive up into the Dolomites where we’ll spend the next 7 nights.

January 21, 2021: We’ll head out early enough to arrive at our first location with plenty of time to capture the dusk light as it turns pink on the mountain tops. We’ll be visiting locations around the town of Cortina, which is surrounded by many of the Dolomites’ tallest mountains. After our full day of photography, we’ll warm up with hot beverages to discuss winter camera techniques, composition, and post-processing.

January 22–23, 2021: We’ll enjoy another sunrise near Cortina before we head up to Rifugio Lagazuoi. Lagazuoi is perched at the very summit of a mountain, offering fantastic views of the surrounding Dolomites in all directions. We’ll have two sunsets and sunrises here to give us ample opportunity for the best light. The meals are excellent, and there is a sauna to warm your chilled bones after being out in the cold for hours.

January 24–25, 2021: We’ll ride the tram down from Lagazuoi and load into our vans for a short ride through the mountains to our next Rifugio. We’ll board a gondola to a mid-mountain chalet where we’ll walk a short distance to Rifugio Fermeda. Here we’ll have the opportunity to ride another chairlift to the ridge where we’ll photograph one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the Dolomites, the Odle group. We’ll also have views of the Sella group, Sassolungo, the Funes valley, and even into Austria.

January 26, 2021: After another magnificent sunrise, we’ll head back down to the vans and drive back to Cortina for our final sunset and image review. We’ll choose one of the locations we did not visit earlier for sunset before a warm and celebratory meal and image review.

January 27, 2021: Sunrise breakfast then drive back to Venice for flights home.

A Note on Accommodations

We will be staying in a hotel in Cortina and at rifugios on the slopes of the mountains. While in the rifugios, everyone will have shared rooms and shared bathrooms just down the hall. These are very nicely appointed facilities with warm showers and extra warm bedding for the winter. Hot meals are served in each rifugio, giving us the best opportunity to be close to our locations.
