Faroe Islands Photography Workshop

Untamed landscapes and dramatic light

March 30 – April 6, 2026

  • Sheer rock walls tower above the sea and deep fjords
  • Rolling green hills, turf-roofed homes and a rich Viking history
  • Ever-changing weather provides stunning, dramatic light

The Faroes reward patience, flexibility, and a sharp eye. This dramatic landscape is a perfect canvas, with rugged cliffs rising from crashing seas and small villages clinging to steep, grass-covered slopes. Here, dynamic weather moves fast, transforming the mood and light by the hour. Mist swirls through a fjord one moment as sunlight breaks through; the next, storm clouds roll in over snow-dusted peaks. It’s a land of constant contrast, where every scene feels fleeting—and every moment is worth chasing with a camera.

This workshop is designed to immerse you in the wild beauty of the Faroes. You’ll photograph sweeping coastal cliffs, sea stacks battered by waves, and waterfalls that plunge straight into the Atlantic. Picturesque villages provide a softer counterpoint—colorful homes and quiet harbors nestled beneath towering mountains. Late spring often delivers the perfect combination of moody skies, fresh snow, and powerful winds. On the right day, you might even capture the elusive reverse waterfalls the islands are known for.

Each day brings new photographic opportunities shaped by light and weather. From wide landscapes to tight detail work, you’ll learn how to build strong, compelling compositions in fast-changing conditions. You’ll cover techniques like long exposures for water in motion, focus stacking for depth, and managing extreme contrast in light and shadow.

You’ll receive hands-on guidance throughout the trip, with personalized instruction both in the field and during image review sessions. Our small group size means more time for one-on-one feedback—tailored to your experience level and goals.

This workshop is about more than chasing great landscapes—it’s about learning how to respond to light, weather, and environment in real time. The Faroes will challenge you, but they’ll also sharpen your instincts and elevate your photography. You’ll head home not only with a strong set of images but with practical tools you can apply anywhere—from stormy coastlines to quiet landscapes closer to home.

Itinerary

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

March 30, 2026: Airport Pickup and Sunset Photography Session at Vagar

We will pick you up at Vagar airport at 2:00 PM. From there, we will have a short 40-minute drive to the hotel, where we will check in. This will be our base for the week. After we will have a short introduction followed by an early dinner before heading out to shoot sunset. If you arrive a few days before the workshop begins, we can arrange to pick you up in the capital Tórshavn, on April 2nd.

March 31 – April 5, 2026: Exploring the Faroe Islands, Boat Trips, and Remote Photography Adventures

The Faroe Islands has so much to offer for us landscape photographers. Over the next five full days, you can expect some hiking, walking, a boat trip to a remote part of the Faroe Islands to see an absolutely amazing sea stack, photographing waterfalls, a ferry to an island to photograph the lighthouse on Kalsoy, the location where James Bond sadly met his end…no really, there’s even a headstone! Most locations are within 30–40 minutes of the hotel.

Please note that everything is weather-dependent on the Faroe Islands, and all locations we visit are based on current weather conditions. This approach has given us the best results over the years.

April 6, 2026: Farewell Breakfast in Faroe Islands, Scenic Drive to Airport

Our last day will be a farewell breakfast at the hotel before the drive back to the airport. We will aim to have you all back at the airport for flights out after 1:00 PM. If you are staying on a few days extra we can drop you to the capital Tórshavn.

Bernard is an exceptional guide. His passion and pride for showing us his country is off the charts. More than a guide, he is an enthusiastic entertainer, an advocate for his country, an exceptional photographer and just fun to be around.

Joseph was great. He has very good leadership skills- attentive, good sense of humor, thinking ahead and planning. He is also a very good instructor- listening to questions, giving feedback / suggestions, and not just showing how to do a particular technique, but also why and when a person might use it.

Outstanding instructions from Joseph Roybal. He is a great teacher who is a knowledgeable photographer with a great passion to share what he knows. Joseph took his time very patiently with each one of the participants to explain composition, camera settings, positioning, etc and later went through very educational editing sessions. I would give him a sixth star.
