Sea Birds and Landscapes on Norway's Northern Coast

This workshop is designed as an extension to our Svalbard Expedition, but anyone is welcome!

In the far north east of Norway is a location called Finnmark. We’ll base out of Vardø, and from here we will be able to photograph this amazing coastal region in the midnight sun. We will also be using boats to get to some very important bird sanctuaries, where we will find puffins, guillemots, terns, skuas and many other arctic birds. This is a very remote area, known only to Norwegian and some European photographers, definitely on the top of their lists! Andy is assisted by local guide Bjarne Riesto (see his work here), and be assured: we know just where to put our sticks in the ground for amazing photographs! Head over to Google Maps and you will see exactly where we are going. We will explore and shoot the coast from Hornøya and Vardø all the way up to Hamningberg.

I throughly enjoyed learning so much about the bird life, and photographing so many birds. I have waited years to see the puffins! Being able to observe the puffins in their environment and to photograph them was magical for me. Once again, I learned a lot from Muench Workshops, the pros were never far away and there to answer my questions and help me with composition.

Itinerary and General Information

Our Svalbard ship returns to Longyearbyen just after midnight on June 18, 2019. We’ll sleep in, and disembark the ship after breakfast. We will have a bit of time in Longyearbyen until our afternoon flight on Widerøe Airlines to Vardø via Tromsø. We land Vardø, where we are based for 4 nights. On our way to Vardø this first evening, we’ll stop and shoot the midnight sun. We will shoot the birds and landscapes on Hornøya, and we have also planned a boat ride out to the island of Syltefjordstauran for even more birds! In between, we will have many locations to choose from to shoot sea-side landscapes in this incredibly beautiful part of Norway.

Of course we will have more time for image review, critique and post-processing instruction.

Andy and Bjarne will be working on a much more precise itinerary over the next months. We will have plan A and plan B for every day, so that we can adjust as needed due to weather and other conditions.

We will depart from Vardø on June 22, 2019, and fly to Oslo. Workshop concludes. There we will spend one night at the Radisson Blu Oslo Airport Hotel. Flights home can be anytime on June 23, 2019.
