Iceland From Above
August 7 – 14, 2023
1 Spot Left
Describing Iceland’s Highlands requires many superlatives. The region contains Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull, Iceland’s tallest mountain, and some of Iceland’s most active volcanoes: Hekla, Eyjafjallajökull, and Katla. The Highlands is also home to many other notable peaks, moss-covered passes, mighty waterfalls, ancient basalt formations, wildlife-rich oases, and unique vegetation.
We’ll be visiting locations that provide access to incredible landscapes visible from our drones. We’ll access all these locations in our private super jeep that provides power for charging batteries throughout the day.
Bring your drone, camera, and tripod to be prepared. You’ll be spending hours each day flying over waterfalls, braided rivers, and lakes surrounded by green moss and geologic formations. Our instructors will be helping four “photo pilots” at a time, ensuring everyone has help piloting and composing on their controllers.
You’ll learn how to fly your drone efficiently and use its camera capabilities. When not photographing, we’ll take time for our signature image reviews and post-processing instruction.

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
August 15, 2024: Meet at our hotel in Reykjavik for dinner and review logistics for the week ahead.
August 16–19, 2024: We’ll stay at a hotel close to the landscapes we wish to photograph with our drones. We’ll be visiting locations specific to drone photography. Our priority will be to access areas with short flights to dramatic air views. Each location will offer a different view of the scenic Icelandic highlands filled with volcanic craters, braided rivers, and blue lakes surrounded by green grass. For the times when we’re not flying, either due to poor weather or limited air time, we’ll have access to transportation via super jeep and can photograph landscapes from the ground below the cloud level. Each day will include one-on-one image reviews of our captured images.
Our super jeep provides power outlets to charge drone batteries throughout the day.
August 20–22, 2024: Weather permitting, we’ll photograph the sunrise, then we’ll make our way out of the highlands to the South Coast, where we will change our landscape. This region of Iceland will provide a series of large river alluvials revealing more patterns in braided rivers, glaciers, and coastline with volcanic spires shooting up out of the ocean.
We’ll continue reviewing our images after each day of photography to learn from any mistakes and improve our piloting and camera skills.
August 23, 2024: We’ll start the day early with a location along the south coast, breakfast, and then a drive back to Reykjavik. We’ll check in to our hotel and enjoy a final dinner to celebrate all the fantastic images captured.
August 24, 2024: Flights home anytime.
This itinerary is designed for drone photography. We plan to make as many as 4-5 stops each day for photographic flights. You will be responsible for bringing enough drone batteries to fly for at least two hours daily. Typical drones fly for 30 minutes on each battery.
You should be capable of taking off, landing your drone manually, and flying simple flight plans to reach a designated location from the air. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced drone photographer, you will find the instruction tailored to your specific needs and desires.
We will follow all drone-specific regulations and laws based on Iceland regulations. We will be visiting regions that allow drones. Leaders will work with each participant to make a flight plan that does not cross with another participant's flight plan.
Easy: You must be able to do short walks around the super jeep to access drone flight locations.
Arrive Keflavík International Airport (KEF), Reykjavík, Iceland before 3:00 PM on August 15, 2024. Flights out can be made anytime on August 24, 2024.
Please see our page How To Prepare For Your Workshop. We will send you a detailed information document 90 days before your workshop. This document will include specifics of where and when to meet, gear and clothing recommendations, and more.
“Randy is not only a professional photographer but also an excellent instructor. He made sure that I and all the attendees were learning something new and got answes to all of our questions. I would definitely take another workshop with him. I gained a lot of information about post-processing and I am happy with how my photos are now processed. ”
