The Highlands of Iceland are a place of extremes; where superlatives are not just appropriate, but necessary. This remote region is home to Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull, Iceland’s tallest mountain, and several of its most active volcanoes, including Hekla, Eyjafjallajökull, and Katla. But the Highlands offer far more than volcanic drama—they’re a vast, untouched wilderness filled with towering peaks, moss-covered valleys, roaring waterfalls, ancient basalt formations, wildlife-rich oases, and otherworldly vegetation.
On this journey, we’ll explore locations that offer exceptional aerial perspectives, perfect for capturing dramatic landscapes with your drone. Traveling in our private super jeep, you’ll have all-day access to charging power for your gear, making it easy to stay in the air longer.
This itinerary features locations in the Highlands accessed from the Highlands Hotel. We have over a decade of experience leading photography trips here, and know when to go to each location, making the most of our time there. Bring your drone, camera, and tripod, as you’ll be flying daily over surreal scenes of braided rivers, crater lakes, and emerald moss stretching across lava fields.
Our instructors will work with you closely, offering hands-on guidance in both drone piloting and aerial composition. You’ll improve your flying skills, master your drone’s camera settings, and come away with a deeper understanding of aerial photography.
When we’re not out flying, we’ll dedicate time to our signature image reviews and post-processing sessions—an essential part of the creative process and a chance to elevate your work even further.

As always in Iceland, this itinerary is subject to change due to weather and light conditions.
Meet at our hotel in Reykjavik for dinner and review logistics for the week ahead.
For our first two days, we’ll be based at Hrauneyjar, focusing on nearby locations, including waterfalls (Hjalparfoss, Háifoss & Ófærufoss).
We will have time to pursue other great locations like Fjallabak nyrôra, Langisjor, Eldgjá, and Landmannalaugar. The hiking in Landmannalaugar is spectacular because of the rhyolite hills, moss patterns, and scattered snow patches. We’ll visit the azure blue crater lake Hnausapollur and walk the rims of this old crater to get views of the distant braided rivers.
Weather permitting, we’ll photograph the sunrise, then we’ll make our way out of the highlands to the South Coast, where we will change our landscape. This region of Iceland will provide a series of large river alluvials revealing more patterns in braided rivers, glaciers, and coastline with volcanic spires shooting up out of the ocean.
We’ll move to another hotel where we will continue seeking new locations with braided rivers, coastline and mountains.
We’ll continue reviewing our images after each day of photography to learn from any mistakes and improve our piloting and camera skills.
We’ll start the day early with a location along the south coast, breakfast, and then a drive back to Reykjavik. We’ll check in to our hotel and enjoy a final dinner to celebrate all the fantastic images captured.
Flights home anytime this day.
This itinerary is designed for drone photography. We plan to make as many as 4-5 stops each day for photographic flights. You will be responsible for bringing enough drone batteries to fly for at least two hours daily. Typical drones fly for 30–40 minutes on each battery.
You should be capable of taking off, landing your drone manually, and flying simple flight plans to reach a designated location from the air. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced drone photographer, you will find the instruction tailored to your specific needs and desires.
We will follow all drone-specific regulations and laws based on Iceland regulations. We will be visiting regions that allow drones. Leaders will work with each participant to make a flight plan that does not cross with another participant's flight plan.
Easy: You must be able to do short walks around the super jeep to access drone flight locations.
