Iceland’s south coast is a land shaped by ice, fire, and time—where black sand beaches meet towering glaciers, and the night sky often ignites with the glow of the aurora borealis. In winter, this dramatic landscape transforms into a photographer’s dream. Frozen waterfalls, luminous ice caves, and sweeping coastal views offer endless opportunities for creative image-making.
This workshop is designed to put you in the right place at the right time—whether it’s composing the textures of blue ice deep inside a glacier, capturing long exposures of cascading water, or tracking the movement of the Northern Lights across a star-filled sky. You’ll explore some of Iceland’s most iconic and photogenic locations, including the basalt sea stacks of Vík, the glacial outlets of Vatnajökull, and the surreal ice formations along Diamond Beach.
With two experienced Muench Workshops Pros by your side, you’ll receive personal instruction throughout the week, both in the field and during image reviews. We’ll focus on refining your photography in low light and building strong compositions in fast-changing weather. You’ll also learn how to approach complex scenes—like aurora or ice caves—with confidence and creative control.
Safety is a priority on this adventure. We’ll be accompanied by certified glacier guides and supplied with proper equipment, including helmets and crampons, ensuring safe access to the ice caves and glacier terrain.
This small-group experience is built around learning, exploration, and shared passion for photography. Whether you’re just starting out or refining an established style, you’ll come away with more than just great images—you’ll leave with new skills, fresh inspiration, and a deeper connection to one of the most visually powerful places on Earth.
This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
Fly into Keflavik Airport (KEF) before 3:00 PM and be picked up and transported to our hotel in Reykjavik, Iceland. We’ll meet and greet over a group dinner and have a safety briefing.
We’ll head out to the south coast of Iceland in our super truck to the town of Vik. We’ll have time to explore the landscape locations around town, such as Reynisdrangar, tall spires shooting up from the Atlantic ocean several hundred feet tall. Depending on the conditions, we will visit Skógafoss, surrounded by ice.
We’ll move farther east along the south coast to the Glacier Lagoon. Our hotel is in a region with access to several ice caves. We’ll have time to visit Skaftafell, Svinafellsjokull glaciers, and the Glacier Lagoon Jökulsárlón.
The locals know today’s ice cave as Crystal Cave near the Vatnajokull glacier. By this time, you’ll have plenty of training with your equipment to feel comfortable walking on ice and capturing images in this very unusual landscape.
Today we’ll head out into a much lesser-known glacier to explore a more remote ice cave in the Flaajokull glacier region. There will be more logistics to reach this cave, but with the help of your guides, you will feel much more comfortable on the ice. You’ll have plenty of time to capture amazing images of these unique ice caves within the glaciers.
We’ll begin our return west along the south coast to Vik, where we’ll visit some new landscape locations and the famous “Ice Beach.” With favorable conditions, we’ll plan on visiting Vestrahorn and Stokksnes.
Today we embark on our final journey into a new and enormous ice cave that requires a super truck to access. By this time, you’ll be very comfortable working with your camera gear on ice and capable of capturing impressive images within the largest ice cave. After a great adventure, we’ll return to Reykjavik for our last night and final dinner.
Fly home anytime. You’ll be provided transportation to the airport from our hotel.
Moderate: Short walks on icy surfaces for up to 2 miles. Possible cold and windy conditions.
