Wildlife Safari in Kenya's Masai Mara

September 26 – October 6, 2022

Join veteran Muench Workshops pro Randy Hanna on this exclusive small-group wildlife safari in Kenya’s Masai Mara Reserve and Mara North Conservancy. You will be guided to some of the best wildlife photography experiences on the planet in two of our favorite locations.

We start our safari in the Masai Mara Reserve along the Mara River. Our camp is uniquely located to give us outstanding vantage points for photographing a key part of the Great Migration when thousands of wildebeests and zebras cross the Mara River heading south to Tanzania. While we can’t guarantee that Mother Nature will produce a river crossing for us, we have selected the best location and time of the year to significantly increase our odds to photograph this exciting event. During this time of year, the area will be teeming with wildlife but our location will have few other tourists. With exclusive use of the camp, we will set our own schedules around wildlife activities and potential crossing activities.

Set on a private riverside camp-site, this snug little setup is chock-full of character with an incredible view over the rushing Mara River that hosts snorting hippos and languorous crocodiles. Nestled among a stand of wild olive and orange croton trees, the camp is right next to a lively salt lick that regularly attracts black rhinos, and lions and leopards searching for their next meal. With an abundance of prey in this area, it’s the perfect spot for spectacular game photography. We’ll have five days and nights here to photograph the diverse wildlife. We’ll get out of the vehicles when we can, shoot the stars, and burn up lots of memory cards as we go after the predators, hundreds of birds, and over 70 mammal species. We are set to photograph some of the most spectacular wildlife that Kenya has to offer: lions, leopards and jackals thrive on the rich diversity of prey that inhabits the area.

Next up we’ll head to the Mara North Conservancy where depending on the arrival of the rains, the great migration should be happening – when wildebeest and zebra herds numbering in the hundreds of thousands thunder across the plains to the riverbanks and hurtle themselves through waters teeming with immense hungry crocodiles. But it’s not just the migration – we’ll photograph the Big 5 (lion, cape buffalo, leopard, elephant, rhino) as well as carnivores including cheetah, hyena, jackal, serval cat, wild dog, and bat-eared fox. There are numerous species of antelopes as well as the massive Masai giraffe, the tallest mammal on land! The Masai Mara also sustains over 470 resident and migrant bird species; approximately 60 of these consist of raptors such as eagles, kites, harriers, hawks, falcons, and kestrels. The majestic ostrich also resides here, as do herons, egrets, bitterns, grebes, pelicans, cormorants, ibises, spoonbills, rails, crakes, secretary birds and the glamorous crown crested crane. Armed with off-road driving permits, we will be unrestricted with our movements as we position ourselves to capture those amazing shots.

Everything’s all-inclusive – you’ll have amazing food, luxurious lodgings, and plenty of space in our vehicles for you and your gear. Expect to be immersed in photography and on safari from before sunup to after sunset. Everyone can expect to learn the finer points of wildlife photography and to practice and refine “the art of seeing” where you will work on improving your compositions. In the evenings and during downtimes, Randy will be working with you on image reviews and post-processing. Are you ready for a Muench Safari? Read on!

Itinerary

About the wildlife: This workshop offers significant opportunities for photographing wildlife, and while we do our best to maximize our wildlife encounters—based on past experiences, local knowledge, and the current conditions—we need to impress upon you that the wildlife really is wild and that we don’t control it.

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

September 26, 2022: Arrive in Nairobi, Kenya and our VIP service will meet you airside, and get you through customs and immigration. We will transfer you to our hotel for the night where you can have a light meal, refresh and rest from the long travel day.

September 28–30, 2022: We’re on safari in the Mara Reserve. Weather dependent, we often will be out all day searching for wildlife encounters. We’ll be up before sunrise and out photographing when the animals start their day. This time of day also provides the best light. Expect to stay out as long as possible, but we will return to camp for some downtime, brunch or lunch, and to download images. Later in the day, we’ll go out again for the afternoon game drive until sunset. We’ll work with you on images after dinner as much as possible. If the conditions permit, we’ll even shoot the stars!

October 1, 2022: After our morning game drive and breakfast, we’ll head out by vehicle to our next camp in the Mara North. We will see and photograph wildlife on this short road transfer, and likely have lunch along the way.

October 2–5, 2022: Our camp is located in the Mara North Conservancy, the heart of the Masai Mara ecosystem, and is the perfect base from which to explore the wonders of the Mara. The vast fertile plains of the Masai Mara boast a plethora of wildlife; with over 450 bird species and both resident and transient populations of lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, to name a few. The plains are dense with game! It’s a fantastic location for those wanting to observe the spectacle of the great migration, classified among the “Seven Wonders of the World.” From July to November over 1.3 million wildebeests and zebras cross the Serengeti and Mara Plains in search of green pastures.

The stars shine bright at night, undimmed by the harsh lighting of civilization. Guests enjoy the unique experience of listening to the sounds of lions, leopards and hyenas foraging and hunting while being cosseted with traditional and modern comforts such as a campfire and cozy duvets.

October 6, 2022: After our morning game drive and breakfast, we will pack up and fly to Nairobi, and transfer to dayrooms at the Nairobi Sheraton. Flights home or elsewhere this evening.
