Our exact lodge dates are confirmed by the lodge about six months in advance, so the listed dates may shift by a few days.
Morning light slides across Lake O’Hara, turning the water a deep alpine blue while fresh snow clings to the high peaks. Early summer brings the first wildflowers to the meadows, clear air after cool nights, and long days that open generous windows at dawn and dusk. The scale is intimate and grand at once, with larch stand above the shoreline and steep walls framing reflections that shift with the wind.
This small-group workshop, limited to six guests, is built around rare access to one of the Canadian Rockies’ most photogenic valleys. Muench Workshops is the only private group allowed to operate here, and a local certified hiking guide leads us on the area’s classic trails, which are well-maintained and chosen to match conditions. Some routes climb into hanging basins where small streams braid through tundra and cascades drop from snowfields. Others trace the lakeshore.
Our focus is on the mountain landscape. A typical day could see mornings and evenings that are spent working with low sun and calm water for reflections, while mid-day is used for scouting, hikes to new vantage points, and careful studies of texture, color, and scale. You will refine techniques appropriate to the scene, such as focus stacking for deep foregrounds, thoughtful use of polarizers to manage glare on water, and controlled long exposures for moving water when the conditions suit.
Instruction is direct and practical, with plenty of time in the field for one-on-one guidance. We keep reviews concise and useful, concentrating on composition, exposure decisions, and a clean workflow that supports natural color and contrast. There is time to ask questions, compare approaches, and build a coherent set of images across changing weather and light.
We base at Lake O’Hara Lodge, where excellent meals in the dining room and private log-cabin accommodations along the lake make early starts and late finishes comfortable. Bring hiking boots and poles for trail days, and comfortable slippers for use in the lodge. Plan for a pace that balances photography with time to pause, watch the light, and, at times, simply sit on the porch and take in the view.
You can expect to leave with a cohesive portfolio that reflects Lake O’Hara’s alpine character, from quiet shoreline reflections to high-basin vistas and close details of rock and water. Just as important, you will come away with stronger field craft for mountain environments, a reliable approach to working in variable light, and thoughtful file development that lets landscapes speak for themselves.
This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
Meet at Calgary airport at 1:00 PM for a ride to our lodge in Canmore. Check-in, dinner, and orientation.
Early breakfast, then drive to Lake O’Hara trailhead to catch the private bus to the lodge. We’ll spend the following days exploring this fantastic alpine wonderland, where we’ll photograph mountains that tower 5,000 feet above the lake. Because you’ll be staying in a lakeside cabin, you’ll be able to walk out your door and take a picture. This region is known for it’s trails, all built engineers who were masons. Years were spent placing the perfect sized stones in the correct place to allow you to walk through a meadow without stepping on the grasses and flowers. We’ll spend each day exploring these trails and reaching incredible vistas. The scenes change every year we have visited this incredible shangri-La.
You will never want this trip to end, but unfortuately it must. On this last day, we’ll rise early photograph sunrise and enjoy a great home made breakfast. After packing up, we’ll make our final ride back down the dirt road to the trailhead, where we’ll be met with our private van and taken to Calgary for flights home.
Lake O'Hara Lodge is a small, family-run sanctuary in the Yoho National Park, British Columbia. Most of our group will be staying in the lakeside cabins, and we may also have rooms in the main lodge. The cabins are right on the water of this stunning lake — it's like sleeping in a picture postcard. Each cabin has two beds and a bathroom. The accommodations are shared. You will be responsible for bringing your luggage and gear to and from your cabin.
There are no vehicles at the lodge — except for the bus that brings people from the main parking lot, which is about a half-hour below the lodge. The bus runs only periodically; mostly, it is idle and quiet. This makes for a tranquil environment where you can really connect with nature.
All meals are served in the main lodge. No outside shoes are allowed in the lodge, so we recommend bringing a pair of slippers to change into from your hiking boots. You can leave them in the mudroom when you're not using them. Dinners are a set menu, which is displayed at your table. Lunch is a sack lunch we will bring with us when we set out for the day.
Since there are no vehicles, every outing will be a hike. Some are relatively easy, such as walking the perimeter of the lake. Others require a bit of elevation gain. The lake is set in a valley, and in nearly every direction you look, you have to hike up. The good news is that once you reach the top of the ascent, you're on a plateau for easier walking. You have to be prepared for long days of hiking with you gear. If you have questions about the fitness requirements, please contact us, we'd be happy to tell you more.

Challenging: You can handle daily hikes up to 5 miles with elevation gains of 1,000 feet, based at an elevation of 7,000 feet.
Arrive Calgary International Airport (YYC), Calgary, Alberta before 1:00 PM on June 19, 2026. Flights out can be made after 6:00 PM on June 24, 2026. Air travel delays are common. Please arrive early, possibly even the day prior, so you don’t miss any of the workshop.
Please see our page How To Prepare For Your Workshop. We will send you a detailed information document 90 days before your workshop. This document will include specifics of where and when to meet, gear and clothing recommendations, and more.
