In Monument Valley, sandstone buttes rise from the red earth like sculptures, junipers twist against bold skies, and late-season monsoon clouds build into towering forms perfect for black-and-white infrared photography. Using infrared, foliage glows white, tones in the skies deepen, and familiar scenes transform into graphic studies of tone and texture. With Navajo guides, we’ll work from classic overlooks to quiet corners and make a dedicated push to Hunts Mesa for sweeping, elevated perspectives that are especially beautiful in monochrome.
This workshop is suitable for both beginners in infrared photography and those further on their infrared journey. Instruction is constant and hands-on, tailored to this itinerary’s opportunities, including filter choice, avoiding hotspots, controlling diffraction, and achieving sharp focus. You’ll learn how to use IR’s strengths, revealing familiar scenes in striking, emotive ways to create images that feel intentional and timeless.
In the classroom, we’ll review your images, looking for ways to improve technique. We’ll all discuss our compositions and learn from each other’s work. Through this, you will start to train your vision for the invisible, learning to anticipate how the world changes when viewed through an infrared filter. We’ll demonstrate the post-processing workflow for infrared images from import to the finishing touches that will make your images sparkle.
We move with respect for place and culture, following Navajo guidance and leaving each location as we found it. You’ll return with a set of infrared images – desert forms, storm built skies and luminous junipers – plus a workflow for monochrome IR that you can use anywhere the light and weather allows graphic, elegant photographs.

Meet at The Gouldings Hotel by 3:00 PM for check-in and orientation. Sunset shoot to follow.
We have created these two days full of photography and post-processing lessons. Get ready to capture amazing landscape images in infrared while on private tours of Monument Valley to locations with unusual views of monuments, junipers, and large caves. We leave early in the morning to learn all about how low light at blue hour looks in IR. Then we spend some time in a private meeting room teaching beginner and advanced methods of processing your images with Lightroom and Photoshop. We then venture out for the afternoon while the clouds fill the skies to chase the best light throughout the valley with guides who know exactly where to go to take advantage of the conditions.
We have arranged a full day of adventure to visit the amazing Hunts Mesa when the clouds should be boiling with texture, virga, and possible rain. We will be out all day until dark, enjoying the views and photography. While on the mesa, you will be served a warm meal cooked over a fire to keep you fortified.
On our last morning, we will enjoy a hot breakfast followed by our final image review and post-processing lesson. We’ll say our final good-byes!
Infrared (IR) photography opens up a fascinating new way to see your landscape subjects—foliage glows, skies darken, and even portraits take on an ethereal quality. At its heart, IR captures slightly longer wavelengths than visible light, which introduces unique behavior in lenses, sensors, and exposure. While it introduces some technical challenges—such as focus shifts, hotspots, and diffraction—once understood, it becomes a creative tool rather than a burden.
In this workshop we'll demystify IR photography: choosing the right filter or converted camera, understanding how IR affects lens and sensor behavior, and processing IR files (monochrome or otherwise) without needless complexity. Most importantly, we'll guide you to embrace the "vibe" of IR—less about pixel-peep perfection and more about mood, light, and discovery.
