New Mexico Land of Enchantment Photography Workshop

Southwest Landscapes and Night Skies

September 4 – 8, 2026

  • Gnarly junipers, ochre colored buttes, and the meandering Chama River
  • Experiment with star trails, focus stacking at night, and Photoshop
  • Learn to use lighting to illuminate the foreground of a landscape

There’s a reason New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment! Sandstone mesas glow at sunrise, juniper and sage cast long shadows across open country, and clouds build over the high desert. Early fall brings warm days, cool nights, and warm autumn light that reveals subtle color and form — the same light that inspired Georgia O’Keeffe. From badlands and hoodoos to cottonwood-lined rivers and classic adobe architecture, this landscape invites wide vistas and quiet studies of texture and form.

Downtime at our inn beneath the cottonwoods offers warm hospitality, good meals, and time to reset before the next shoot.

We’ve timed this workshop to coincide with the ideal moon phase for night photography, allowing perfectly illuminated landscapes beneath the Milky Way. Expect an immersive learning experience, with targeted sessions on near/far composition, illuminated night landscapes, and more. We will guide you toward clearer intent and stronger execution, helping you find your composition, camera settings, and develop your post-processing, so your photography keeps improving long after you return home.

You’ll leave with a cohesive portfolio that reflects New Mexico’s light and space, and a confident workflow you can apply anywhere—any season, any sky.

Are you ready to visit the Land of Enchantment?

Itinerary

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

September 4, 2026: Meet and Greet, Sunset Photography Intro, Nighttime Techniques at Abiquiu Inn

Meet and greet on the front veranda of the Abiquiu Inn at 2:30 PM. We will take this time to review your equipment and the itinerary with you and your camera settings. We will have an early dinner to take advantage of our first sunset shoot and find nighttime compositions during the daylight hours. During our first evening shoot, we will also learn how to use low-level lighting techniques to illuminate the foreground of a landscape scene.

September 5, 2026: Chama River Dawn Shoot, Image Review, Milky Way Alignment at Sunset

This day will be all about photographing along the Chama River. We have an early morning shoot over the river, then return for a hearty breakfast, followed by image review and processing. We will take a short break and head to an early dinner at 3:30 PM. We will head to some overlooks for sunset, where the Milky Way galactic center perfectly aligns with the scene.

September 6, 2026: Northern Milky Way Captures, Sunrise at a Butte, Sunset with Juniper Trees

We will leave the Abiquiu Inn early morning to photograph the northern Milky Way against a New Mexico butte. We will practice star trails, and if you are up for a challenge, focus stacking at night. We will also shoot sunrise here. We will then head back to breakfast. After breakfast, we will again have an image review and processing, followed by a well-deserved break. Again, we will have an early dinner followed by a sunset shoot with gnarly juniper trees in a red rock canyon. Afterward, we will photograph the night sky. Keep your fingers crossed for clear skies.

September 7, 2026: Intensive Post Processing Lessons, Celebratory Sunset and Dinner

This day will be dedicated to post-processing lessons and a sunset shoot—plan on reviewing all digital post-processing lessons and learning more about Photoshop on this day. The sunset will be a welcomed break at the end of a great day of learning, followed by a final dinner and celebration.

September 8, 2026: Optional Final Sunrise Shoot and Farewell Breakfast

Possible sunrise shoot, breakfast, and goodbyes.

Wayne is a people magnet with a natural way of making everyone feel welcome. This is a rare gift to find. He was also very thoughtful. When he noticed I was having arm issues he carried my camera and tripod for me. He also checked up on me to make sure I was ok. I will look for workshops with him as a guide.

I just completed my first Muench workshop. If this was representative, it may not be my last. Aiquiu was indeed enchanted. Thank you for a great time. Hope to see you again.

Wayne is a gem! In addition to being a gifted photographer, he is a natural teacher. His passion for nature is contagious, he's infinitely patient and clearly cares about his students, wanting each of us to achieve our individual goals for the workshop. He's engaging and funny which makes learning much easier.

What makes Muench workshops head and shoulders above the rest are the small workshop sizes, individualized attention and knowledgeable (and fun) instructors. Wayne and Kiki did a great job.

Wayne was terrific. He was available as much or as little as I needed. He asked what our individual goals for the workshop were and then followed up as needed with each of us. I wanted to work on improving my composition skills, and Wayne checked in with me on each shoot, sometimes several times, and worked with me to help me improve. His instruction was top notch!

Wayne was beyond patient and accommodating. He went far beyond the call of duty by cleaning my camera's sensor, while giving me a tutorial on how to do it myself. He is a jewel.

Wayne is great it's that simple. Night photography is so much about location and timing and Wayne got us set up and ready for some great shot,

I would also like to commend Wayne on his follow up for my and the rest of the groups requests during and so far after the workshop.

Everything about the workshop was fabulous! I never did night photography and learned so much in just a short time. I have never used Photoshop and now feel comfortable to navigate in the program.

Highly recommend Wayne Suggs for this or any workshop. As you can see here, he's an amazing photographer and I can tell you from my own experience, a fantastic teacher. Of course, being a Muench Workshop means all the details will be top notch.
