New York City Skylines: 9/11 Tribute Photography Workshop

New York's stunning skyline at night

September 10 – 13, 2026

  • A stunning and moving tribute in light to those we lost on 9/11
  • Expert guiding puts you in the right place time after time
  • Detailed instruction from start to finish to create a lasting tribute

Every September, two columns of light rise up over Lower Manhattan and into the night sky as a quiet tribute to those who were lost on 9/11. The 9/11 Tribute of Light is a symbol of resilience, reflection, and hope. From the Hudson River, the Brooklyn bridges, and rooftops across the city, we will photograph this powerful scene with intention.

First lit on March 11, 2002, the installation was a temporary memorial and has continued each year because of the community’s response. Hundreds of high-intensity lights are arranged in two squares near the former Twin Towers site to form two beams that can reach four miles into the sky.

Our focus throughout the workshop is to help you photograph the event with respect and meaning. The night before the tribute, we will photograph the New York skyline at twilight to refine composition, exposure, and stability for long lens and long exposure work. When the beams go up the next night, we will be ready to work quietly and thoughtfully, allowing time for personal reflection while creating technically sound and emotionally resonant images.

In the days around the tribute, we will explore New York’s architecture from the Statue of Liberty to the Brooklyn Bridge and the Empire State Building to build a cohesive skyline portfolio that reflects the city’s strength and spirit.

Throughout the workshop, we combine real-time coaching with focused practice in cityscapes, low-light landscapes, long lens compression, previsualization, and more. We’ll also have image reviews to demonstrate post-processing techniques to make the most of your tribute images.

You will leave with lasting technical skills and, more importantly, photographs that honor the occasion and express your own sense of remembrance and respect.

Itinerary

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

September 10, 2026: Photography Workshop Introduction, Sunset Skyline Practice

We’ll meet at our hotel at 2:00 PM. After introductions, we’ll discuss the techniques and information needed to prepare for photographing the tribute lights the following night. After dinner, we’ll head out to practice these techniques, photographing the skyline at sunset and into blue hour from a nearby location.

September 11, 2026: Review and Prepare for Tribute Light Photography, Nighttime City Excursion

Today, we will review your images from last night and ensure that you are fully prepared for tonight’s tribute display. Much of today will be dedicated to resting up for our very long night as we photograph the lights from various locations all over the city. It’s a big city, but we know just where to go to get a wide variety of views of the tribute. It’s bound to be a challenging and rewarding night of shooting.

September 12, 2026: Lunchtime Image Review, Diverse Skyline Photography at Iconic Landmarks

This morning is a sleep-in and breakfast on your own. We’ll have lunch and an image review to see what you captured of the tribute. We’ll demonstrate processing techniques to make your images sing. We’ll head out for an early, light dinner and then photograph the skyline from various viewpoints depending on conditions—the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn bridge, Manhattan bridge, and the Empire State Building.

September 13, 2026: Sunrise Waterfront Shoot, Final Image Review, Departures

We will shoot sunrise from the waterfront, followed by an image review and flights home.

It's always great to get the shots but it was really fun as well. Got a good feel of New Jersey/New York which was possible based on her expertise.

This was my first photography workshop and my expectations were most definitely met. I am now researching my next trip with Muench Workshops. I loved implementing everything I have learned. Putting to practice on the fly is not something I have much experience with and was pleasantly surprised that it is easier than I thought it would be.

Jennifer took us through the app PhotoPills to the point where the next night I was able to accurately plot where the moon was going to rise that was quite exciting for me. Slowly, but surely overcoming fear of Lightroom and Jennifer certainly help me gain some steps in that this weekend.

Jennifer spent a fair amount of time individually to review and critic photos and paid a lot of attention to every student in the field. In addition, she always tried her best to take us to the locations for best shot.
