New York City Skylines: Manhattanhenge Photography Workshop

New York's stunning skyline at night aligns with the sun and moon

May 28 – June 1, 2026

  • Capture NYC’s urban beauty as it aligns with the sun
  • Expert guiding to get the most of this incredible experience
  • Sweet golden light, blue hour, and impressive moonrise opportunities

The city enters a brief alignment. As the sun drops towards the Hudson, its disk settles between Manhattan’s steel and glass, and the avenues become glowing tunnels. Traffic slows, windows flash and the grid becomes a frame. From our vantage points on key cross streets, the sun sits perfectly between the towers and the city gives you a composition you can’t get on any other evening.

This workshop is centered around photographing both Manhattanhenge events, the half sun one day and the full sun the next, so you can see how the geometry and light changes from one alignment to the other. We will put you at pre-scouted locations with clean views and strong foregrounds, then guide you through the timing, lens choice and compression that makes the disk read between the buildings. We will focus on dynamic range control, including bracketing and metering, as well as practical strategies for dealing with heat shimmer, flare and moving traffic in the frame.

Outside the alignments we will add to your portfolio with classic New York cityscapes. Sunset behind the Statue of Liberty is a clear silhouette study, while Brooklyn Bridge Park and Gantry Plaza State Park offer layered cityscapes with reflections, leading lines and afterglow.

You will leave with precise, time-critical images of Manhattanhenge in both phases and a set of refined New York cityscapes. But more importantly you will have a repeatable approach to planning and executing high-contrast urban sunsets, from scouting and timing to exposure strategy and post-processing so you can tackle similar events anywhere a city grid meets the horizon.

It's always great to get the shots but it was really fun as well. Got a good feel of New Jersey/New York which was possible based on her expertise.

This was my first photography workshop and my expectations were most definitely met. I am now researching my next trip with Muench Workshops. I loved implementing everything I have learned. Putting to practice on the fly is not something I have much experience with and was pleasantly surprised that it is easier than I thought it would be.

Jennifer took us through the app PhotoPills to the point where the next night I was able to accurately plot where the moon was going to rise that was quite exciting for me. Slowly, but surely overcoming fear of Lightroom and Jennifer certainly help me gain some steps in that this weekend.

Jennifer spent a fair amount of time individually to review and critic photos and paid a lot of attention to every student in the field. In addition, she always tried her best to take us to the locations for best shot.
