Norway Lofoten Photography Workshop

Arctic Landscapes and Northern Lights

February 1 – 10, 2027

  • Photograph auroras over stunning snowy mountainous landscapes
  • Frozen beaches, snow-capped cabins, and a private sea eagle tour
  • Moody skies, crashing waves, and dramatic blue hour seascapes

Experience the magic of winter in Norway’s Lofoten Islands, where jagged peaks, icy fjords, snow-covered beaches, and colorful fishing villages offer a stunning backdrop for photography. Positioned above the Arctic Circle, this workshop puts you in the heart of a landscape where light shifts quickly and dramatically—opening up endless creative possibilities. From auroras dancing across the sea to golden-hour light skimming mountain ridges, the conditions here are made for photographers.

You’ll explore iconic locations like Reine and Hamnøy, as well as the striking beaches of Flakstadøy, Skagsanden, Yttersand, and Haukland. From sunrise to sunset, we’ll chase the best light across fjords, coastlines, and Arctic villages—refining your skills in long exposures, panoramas, and HDR along the way.

A highlight of the trip is a private sea eagle safari—an opportunity to photograph these massive birds in flight, framed by snow-covered peaks. And when conditions align, you’ll have multiple chances to capture the northern lights as they sweep across the sky and reflect in still waters. With two professional photographers guiding you throughout, you’ll always be in position to make the most of these fleeting, spectacular moments.

This is a hands-on learning experience. In addition to extensive field time, you’ll participate in group image reviews and practical Lightroom sessions to help bring out the best in your photos. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to push your skills further, you’ll leave with new techniques and a sharper eye for light, timing, and composition.

This isn’t just about ticking off locations—it’s about slowing down, watching the weather, and working with the light to create meaningful, lasting images. You’ll return home with a portfolio that reflects both the drama and subtlety of Norway—and the confidence to keep growing as a photographer wherever you go next.

Itinerary

About the wildlife: This workshop offers significant opportunities for photographing wildlife, and while we do our best to maximize our wildlife encounters—based on past experiences, local knowledge, and the current conditions—we need to impress upon you that the wildlife really is wild and that we don’t control it.

Our itinerary is planned—but we are always prepared to change things up based on weather and light conditions. Of course, at night we’ll be on watch for northern lights, and you can count on being awakened the instant we find them!

February 1, 2027: Arrive into Leknes Norway

You should arrive into Leknes Norway by 1:00 PM. We will plan to meet you at the airport to drive you to our first hotel.

February 2–4, 2027: Photography Frenzy in Å, Reine, Sakrisøy, Hamnøy, Flakstadøy’s Rocky Shores

We’ll have three days and nights to photograph in and around the picturesque villages of Å, Reine, Sakrisøy, and Hamnøy. We’ll visit the rocky shore of Flakstadøy and the nearby beaches: Skagsanden, Ramberg, and Yttersand. On February 2, after sunrise we will pack up and move to our hotel in Leknes.

February 5–7, 2027: Sunrise Shoots and Northern Lights Vigil from Leknes to Vestvågøy

After breakfast, we’ll head out to shoot sunrise at the beaches near Leknes: Haukland, Vik, Uttakleiv, and Storsandnes, all surrounded by majestic snow-capped mountains. As the day passes, we will visit more scenic locations on the islands of Vestvågøy and Flakstadøy, shooting until the last light fades from the sky. After dinner, we will keep watch for northern lights.

After another night of capturing northern lights at one of Lofoten’s beaches, we’ll sleep in a bit on February 5, have a hot breakfast, then pack up and drive north to the town of Svolvaer – home of the sea eagles and Trollfjorden.

February 7–9, 2027: Epic Svolvær Sea Eagle Safari, Northern Lights Quest, Local Exploration

We will spend 3 nights in stunning Svolvær exploring local scenes, chasing aurora, and enjoying an epic sea eagle safari! The sea eagles are the largest eagle species in the world, and you will have the opportunity for incredible up-close encounters with snowy mountain backdrops that are hard to believe.

February 10, 2027: Capturing the Final Sunrise, Breakfast Farewell in Svolvær

One last sunrise shoot, followed by breakfast at our hotel.

At my age, I do not look at things in dollars but in whether they are worthwhile. The trip seemed expensive, but witnessing how hard Talor and Cody work, how demanding the environment is, and how much effort they expend to ensure we have a positive adventure, I would conclude this was a great value.

Muench Workshops planned a perfect trip that exceeded my expectations. Despite my initial nervousness, the leaders excellent communication and organization ensured a smooth experience. They were attentive to our needs, allowing us to enjoy each location at our own pace. Even when faced with a difficult participant, they handled the situation professionally, prioritizing the group's well-being.

Matt and Cody played a pivotal role in nurturing my inquisitive nature. They consistently fostered an environment where asking questions and seeking knowledge was not only encouraged but celebrated. Their mentorship extended beyond simply answering my inquiries; they actively encouraged me to venture out and explore different subjects and experiment with a wide array of techniques.

Behind the Scenes

Frozen Conditions In Winter

We have been leading people into the cold for over 20 years, and we have some great experience to share that will make your photography far more enjoyable. When you know you'll be photographing in temperatures that drop below freezing and reach -40°F, we suggest the following:

Base Layers: Multiple sets of moisture-wicking, mid-weight, and heavy-weight wool or synthetic long underwear (tops and bottoms).

Mid-Layers: One or more fleece sweaters/pullovers or down/synthetic vests to provide insulation.

Outer Layers: A waterproof and windproof insulated winter coat or parka with a hood. Insulated, waterproof snow pants or ski pants.

Footwear: Insulated, waterproof winter boots that are large enough to fit heavy socks without restricting circulation. "Pac boots" like Sorels are highly recommended. Heavyweight wool or synthetic socks (several pairs), potentially with a thin liner sock. Gaiters to keep snow out of your boots, or ski/snow pants that provide boot cuffs that wrap over the tops of your boots. Comfortable shoes or slippers for indoor use in the evenings.

Accessories: A warm hat (fleece or wool beanie) that covers your ears; a balaclava or face mask is an option for very cold days. A neck gaiter or scarf. Heavy insulated mittens or ski gloves, with a liner glove underneath to allow for dexterity while handling your camera and tripod. USB-powered hand warmers that remain in your jacket pocket. Battery-powered heated vest, jacket, socks, or gloves.

Fitness

Moderate: You must be able to walk in the snow and on icy surfaces with spikes and handle very cold temperatures day and night.
