The Outer Banks and Cape Hatteras National Seashore of North Carolina are subtle and ever changing—perfect for pushing your creativity and vision.
This workshop is a compositional workout where you’ll stretch, strengthen and sharpen your photographic eye through theory and hands-on practice. This workshop isn’t about chasing iconic shots. It’s about making your own.
Under the guidance of our pro, you’ll explore the core compositional principles—balance, space, movement and visual harmony—and apply them to everything from wide-angle landscapes to close up studies of shape, texture and light.
Classroom sessions will build your foundation, daily field trips will give you the time to put theory into practice. Back at our hotel, image reviews will give you honest, practical feedback to track your progress and challenge your instincts.
Whether you’re looking to break out of a creative rut or just refine your skills, this workshop will give you a full compositional reset and the tools to make stronger, more intentional images from scenes that don’t scream for attention.
This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
Morning and early afternoon airport pickups will be available for those who need them.
We will meet at 4:00 PM in the hotel lobby in Nags Head for a short meet-and-greet before making a short drive to the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Here we will introduce some basic compositional principles, put them into practice, and photograph sunset and twilight at the lighthouse. After our group dinner, we will do an optional night-photography shoot or a composition presentation at the hotel, depending on the weather.
Early morning drive to the town of Avon, where we will use the old fishing pier for lessons on leading lines and abstract shapes. This will be followed by searching for abstract images in the sand dunes on Hatteras Island. We will meet for image reviews in the afternoon. In the late afternoon, we will make intimate landscape images in the gnarled live oak grove and photograph sunset over the Pamlico Sound at Salvo. Optional night shoot or composition presentation, depending on the weather.
Our morning begins with sunrise at the dunes at Oregon Inlet, where the light and wind sculpt the sand into complex textures and foreground patterns. Later, we will photograph snow geese and tundra swans at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and the Currituck Lighthouse. We will meet for image reviews in the afternoon, where we will measure our compositional progress. Sunset at Cape Point.
Our final sunrise is at the Bodie Island Lighthouse or Kitty Hawk Pier. Breakfast is followed by our final image review and departures. Flights home can be scheduled after 3:00 PM.
