Street Photography in the City of Light and Love

May 18 – 25, 2024

Paris is lovely in May—the trees and flowers burst out of their winter sleep, and the city becomes a palate of pastel colors. Photo opportunities abound as the city comes alive with abundant flower shows, festivals, street fairs, and fabulous outdoor flea markets.

You’ll visit hidden locations and iconic vantage points, learning and refining our camera techniques along the way. The cafés will beckon, and the aroma of freshly baked bread and french coffee will lure you, but nothing will stop us from capturing this beautiful city in the best light—during golden hour, blue hour, and into the night.

You will be taken to hidden locations and vantage points of iconic places you wouldn’t see without our guidance. There’s plenty of street photography for a diverse, unique, and personal representation of the city. But nothing will be left to chance—we will bring our own model dressed in modern Parisien fashion to wander the subways, back alleys, and busy streets with us. We’ll even have a ballet-trained dancer on top of the Trocadéro with the Eiffel Tower as a backdrop.

Our quaint, upscale hotel is located in the Montmartre district, next to the famous Montmartre Cemetery, close to Sacré-Cœur and the Moulin Rouge. Enjoy drinks on the rooftop patio with a view of the Eiffel Tower.

Join us in this magical city to stretch your skills with focus stacking, low-light, street, and black-and-white photography—while enjoying all the city has to offer!

Itinerary

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

May 18, 2024: Today you will arrive in Paris. We will meet for dinner to discuss our workshop activities over the week. After dinner, we will go out for our first-night photoshoot of some iconic scenes in Montmarte.

May 19, 2024: Today, we will visit the Catacombs, a labyrinth of old quarry tunnels beneath the heart of Paris that has been transformed into an ossuary. The remains of millions of Parisians were transferred into these meandering tunnels between the late eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries as graveyards around the city closed. Spending time in this unusual place is a sobering and fascinating experience.

We’ll continue today’s “Under the streets of Paris” theme by riding the Metro. Did you know the Paris Metro is an underground visual experience worth checking out? We have chosen six of our favorite Paris Metro stations and will visit them alongside a local Parisien guide.

May 20, 2024: Today, we’ll be busy exploring the Champs-Elysées, Musee d’Orsay, and Louvre areas to capture the architectural beauty and manicured gardens that make these sites legendary. After dinner, we will spend the evening photographing the Louvre and adjacent street scenes. Today, we will have a model with us to bring life to some of the images we capture.

May 21, 2024: Today we’ll choose which of Paris’ many small neighborhoods to venture into. Footbridges arch gracefully over the Canal Saint-Martin. Rue Montorgueil, one of Paris’ oldest streets, is vibrant, cheery, and bursting with some of the city’s finest food markets and pastry shops. The region between Montparnasse and Chinatown on the left bank is a hilly, well-hidden quarter whose narrow, winding streets, tiny houses, and art nouveau architecture recall a Paris of another era. Belleville—home to one of Paris’s lively Chinatowns, is a burgeoning artist quarter, home to an array of cultures.

We’ll also make time today to photograph one of the most picturesque churches in the city, Saint Chapelle. Then onward to photograph the rebuilding of the Notre Dame Cathedral after the devastating fire of 2019. We’ll end our day photographing the Louvre at night after the crowds of tourists have left.

May 22, 2024: This morning we’ll visit the architectural grandeur of the opera house, then make our way to the famous Montmartre Cemetery and its century-old tombstones, then climb the stairs at Sacre Coeur. After dinner, we’ll venture out again to do some night photography in the center of Montmartre.

May 23, 2024: This morning we’ll visit Père Lachaise cemetery, the final resting place for many recognizable figures, including Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, and Chopin. We’ll head back downtown to Galeries Lafayette, then dinner and an evening shoot at the Arc de Triomphe.

May 24, 2024: We’ll set out early this morning for a sunrise photoshoot from the Trocadero, with the Eiffel Tower as a backdrop and a ballet dancer model for additional (optional) visual interest. Afterward, we’ll have time for more Paris street photography before returning to our hotel for a final image review. Following dinner, we’ll revisit a few areas we captured earlier this week for the last evening shoot.

May 25, 2024: Flights home can be made anytime today, or we are happy to help you extend your stay in the city.

Testimonials

“This is where the workshop shone for me. This was my first Muench trip although I've attended other workshops. Sometimes, instructors teach in the classroom and during critiques, but only toss out tips in the field. With students having varying degrees of knowledge they seem to settle somewhere in the middle for instruction. This wasn't the case with Kevin. He met people where they were with their photography skills. He was polite, tactful and very perceptive about coaching us where we needed help. ”

— Lisa Hollandsworth, Paris '22

“I have been on well over 30 workshops in 25 years. It is so refreshing to see that the instructors frequently don't carry a camera and really are intent on helping us get our best shots. ”

— Warren Capps, Newfoundland '22
