Wild and Rugged Mountain Peaks in the Andes
April 14–26, 2023
This workshop is for active, hiking photographers who wish to experience the wilderness up close while enjoying the luxury of a fully outfitted camp. We’ll visit both the Argentinian and Chilean sides of this mountain region, which has some of the most dramatic mountains in the world, towering over glaciated lakes and rolling foothills.
Learn about the unique alpine environments within the Los Glaciares and Torres del Paine National Parks. April is the fall season in the southern hemisphere, and we have timed this workshop to photograph the colorful, warm hues of the changing fall foliage.
Be prepared to hike on trails into the alpine zones of these incredible mountains, where our outfitters will provide all the cooking and creature comforts in camp. You’ll have your own nylon tent for all the nights spent camping and hot drinks and food for each meal. Our camps will be within walking distance to the locations at the foot of towering granite mountains reflecting in mirrored alpine lakes. If the sun breaks while eating dinner, no problem, you’ll be right there ready to capture the light.
You will be in a small group of like-minded photographers. In addition to photography, you’ll learn about the local geology, flora, and fauna. You’ll learn camera techniques such as long exposure, exposure bracketing (both manual and automatic), and using various lenses to photograph creative compositions by stitching multiple exposures together. Learn how to capture the alpine glow reflecting in glacial waters of the lakes. You’ll also have time to work on improving your post-processing skills. Learn to pre-visualize with the final image in mind.
With so many dramatic landscapes, you will be captivated—and even during the night when we get the chance to photograph these stunning mountains bathed in stars!
This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
April 14, 2023: Arrive this day in El Calafate, Argentina (FTE airport code). We will meet at our hotel, which is a quick taxi ride from the airport. At 5:00 PM we’ll have an introductory meeting and then enjoy dinner together.
April 15, 2023: We leave our hotel in El Calafate early to visit one of the fastest moving glaciers in the world Perito Moreno Glacier, located in Los Glaciares National Park. After spending time capturing the calving ice, we head back north to El Chalten, our base for a our first two hikes.
April 16–17, 2023: We start the hike after a hearty breakfast. The only pack you’ll carry is for personal items, snacks, water and maybe a camera for capturing images along the trail. All your heavy camping supplies, including other heavy camera equipment will be carried up by outfitters, so you can enjoy the hike. Once in camp, you’ll have time to settle into your tent, eat an early dinner, and walk to the first location to photograph the sunset. The views of Mt Cerro Torre are stunning, and during the next two days and nights, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to capture it in the perfect light. Our camp will be professionally outfitted by local mountain guides and will include a dining tent for relaxing, eating, and hanging out in inclement weather.
April 18, 2023: We’ll hike out of the mountains back to El Chalten for one night in our hotel for hot meals and showers. This will be a perfect rest from camping, allowing everyone time to charge personal batteries and camera batteries.
April 19–20, 2023: We’ll start the hike early from our hotel where the trail ascends directly out of town to our first camp. This will be a seven-mile hike with an elevation gain of 2,000 feet. The camp provides excellent access to some more beautiful scenes within a short walk. We’ll spend two nights camping here giving us plenty of time to explore the various trails in the area just below Mt Fitz Roy. Our camp will be outfitted by the same guides as our first camp.
April 21, 2023: We’ll leave camp and hike back to El Chalten, this time all downhill. Once in town, we’ll have a hearty meal then load in our van and drive back to El Calafate where hot showers await everyone.
April 22–25, 2023: An early start will allow us time to drive into Chile where we’ll spend time in the Torres del Paine National Park. We’ll be staying at the Hotel Pahoe, where we can unpack and enjoy more stunning views from our rooms. We’ll be spending two nights here to explore the shoreline of this beautiful location as well as the surrounding area during the best light. Walks will be much shorter here, giving our legs a rest. We will photograph from the shore by the hotel as well as other locations only a short drive away.
April 26, 2023: After a warm breakfast and hot shower, we’ll pack up and drive back to El Calafate for flights home.
Challenging: You are able to handle hikes up to 8 miles in one day and 2,000 feet in elevation gain.
Arrive Comandante Armando Tola International Airport (FTE), El Calafate before 4:00 PM on April 14, 2023. Flights out can be made after 2:30 PM on April 26, 2023.
