High Peaks of the Italian Dolomites from the comfort of the Rifugios
UPDATE: As of September 24, 2018 this workshop is sold out. Please contact us to get on the waitlist for this workshop.
Join Muench Workshops on this seven night journey through the most scenic mountain landscapes in Italy. You'll be expertly guided by Muench Workshops pro Marc Muench and local photographer and guide Luka Esenko in the heart of the Dolomites, where you can photograph right outside your door. Rifugios are mountain huts with flair—cozy bunks with thick blankets for a great sleep, and hot, hearty food served in an alpine environment. The Italian Dolomites are some of the most inspiring mountains in the world. The highest peaks rise above 10,000 feet, and when viewed from the Rifugios, the many summits stretch from horizon to horizon. The region offers breathtaking views of these jagged mountains, surrounded by fields of green and alpine wildflowers—and with ever-changing atmospheric conditions, it really is a photographer’s playground.
There will be moderate hiking involved to reach some of the Rifugios and the photo locations around them. You will be hiking between two to four hours per day, on trails at elevations around 7,000–9,000 feet. No technical climbing is involved, and elevation gain will be moderate. You will fly into Venice, where the group will meet at a arranged location for introductions before beginning the workshop. We will access the Rifugios by ground transportation, chairlifts, or short hike. We’ll be taking a deep dive into some important landscape photography techniques: exposure, focusing, camera settings, how to focus stack for extreme sharpness through an entire scene, how to best utilize neutral density and polarizing filters, and more.
This is a great opportunity to experience and photograph one of the great mountain environments in the world!
June 28–July 5, 2019
Itinerary and General Information
June 28, 2019: Meet near Venice airport by 1:00 PM (location TBA). Drive to Cortina, where we will be staying for the first night. We'll have an early dinner and visit a nearby location to photograph sunset.
June 29–30, 2019: Sunrise shoot near town, followed by breakfast and then drive to our first Rifugio, next to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (three peaks). We will ascend the mountain in our vans, and then hike about one hour on foot to reach the Rifugio. We'll spend two nights here to capture this vast landscape in great light, at sunrise, sunset, and even during the night when the stars are out.
July 1, 2019: Following sunrise at Three Peaks, we'll descend to our vans and a short drive will take us to the Cinque Torri region and our next Rifugio. From our vans we'll ride a chairlift to our Rifugio that will be only steps away from the summit. This is a photographer's paradise where the five towers will dominate the skyline, and alpine flowers will be blooming this time of year. We'll spend another night in the mountains at the foot of the towers with possible star shooting, depending on weather conditions.
July 2, 2019: Sunrise shoot, breakfast, then descend the chairlift to our vans, and another short drive to the base of our next chairlift, which takes us to another amazing Rifugio. This one will be the highest in elevation, and sits at the top of a mountain ridge with 360° panoramic views. We might be up at night photographing the views with stars, if weather permits.
July 3, 2019: Sunrise shoot and breakfast. We'll ride the chairlift back down to our vans and begin a two-hour scenic drive to our last Rifugio, which is situated in a beautiful green pasture with great views. We'll plan on taking a very scenic one hour hike to one of the most amazing views in the Dolomites. This will be a great time to enjoy the views from our last night up high in the Dolomites.
July 4, 2019: Sunrise, followed by breakfast, and a short ride back down to our vans. We'll drive back into Cortina for our final night of the workshop where we'll stay in a hotel and review some of the amazing images captured during our time.
July 5, 2019: Breakfast and drive back into Venice for connecting flights home.
On the first and last nights, we are in 4-star hotels with en-suite facilities (single rooming available, just ask). At the rifugios, you will sleep on beds with pillows and blankets in dorm-style rooms sharing with other same-gender travelers. Bathroom facilities are shared.
