Small Towns, Castles, and Natural Wonders

October 25 – November 3, 2023

The Highlands of Scotland and the Isle of Skye are a landscape photographer’s dream, offering up forests, glens, mountains, lakes, rivers, coastlines and castles of incomparable beauty. The charm of this area abounds in the castles, farms, and towns that we will photograph. The Jacobite Train, famous for its appearance in the Harry Potter films, will take you back to another century as it thunders past. As you watch the sunrise at the Old Man of Storr or the Quiraing, you will be awed by the beauty of the vista. The coastlines at Neist Point and Elgol are a study of picturesque and primal power.

Join us on this workshop to learn or improve your skills at composition, using long exposures for silky-smooth water, stitching images for panoramas, and your post-processing workflow in Lightroom. We’ll be out in the field shooting as much as possible but will also make time for critiques and image reviews.

We love photographing Scotland, and we’re sure you will, too. The charming villages and lodging on this trip will win you over. Once you set foot in this magical land, it’s a place you’ll wish to return to.

Itinerary

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

October 25, 2023: Arrive in Glasgow, Scotland, by 11:00 AM this day, or if you prefer arrive a day or two earlier to adjust to the time change. We’ll meet at 1:00 PM for our drive to Glencoe, where we’ll photograph the sunset, check in to our hotel, and enjoy a fabulous dinner.

October 26–27, 2023: Our location affords us easy access to all of the streams, lochs, moors, and mountains that we want to photograph: Lochen na h-achlaise at Rannoch Moor, Loch Baa, Buchaille Etive Mor (“the Buckle”), The Three Sisters of Glencoe, and more. We’ll be shooting from before sunrise through sunset as much as possible. We’ll also make time for image reviews to go over composition, image processing, and more.

October 28 – November 1, 2023: On the morning of the 28th, we check out to transfer to our lodging on the Isle of Skye. But first, we’ll stop off to photograph the iconic Jacobite Train, famous for its appearance in the Harry Potter movies. After our ferry ride to Skye, we’ll explore along the coast and islands, taking in the sense of isolation, as we experience ‘the edge effect.’ We will spend five days and nights on Skye, photographing its geological wonders. The Old Man of Storr, the Trotternish Ridge, Elgol—all iconic locations for the landscape photographer. We’ll be out before sunrise, and after sunset to catch the magical light that falls on this most primeval of landscapes. With luck, we will have some clear skies at night to shoot the stars!

Techniques we will teach and reinforce include: use of ND Filters for creative effects with waterfalls and seashore, shooting (and processing) for HDR, panoramas, and more. We will work with you on the art of composition, and the science of proper exposure. And we’ll make sure to include time for critiquing images and Lightroom instruction.

November 2, 2023: After sunrise, breakfast and check out, we leave the Isle of Skye for Eilean Donan Castle in the Highlands. This beautiful 13th Century castle, set out on the water, affords innumerable photographic opportunities, and we’ll explore many of them. We’ll photograph it in the afternoon light, and on through sunset light into the blue hour. Dinner and check in to our hotel will end our final full day of the workshop.

November 3, 2023: After our morning shoot and breakfast, we will depart for Glasgow Airport. Flights home or elsewhere can be anytime after 4:00 PM.
