Mist drifts through the glens of the Scottish Highlands at dawn, and shifting light sweeps across the Isle of Skye’s heather moorlands, sea cliffs, and ever-changing skies—each moment shaped by the beauty of wild, dramatic weather. At the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing, low sun carves texture into basalt pinnacles and folded ridgelines, while the Cuillin Mountains rise sharply over tidal flats and rocky shores. Along the coast at Neist Point and Elgol, Atlantic swell meets volcanic rock, and weather shifts by the minute, giving landscape photographers the kind of light and atmosphere that define Scotland at its most photogenic.
This photography workshop takes you deep into the Scottish Highlands and across the Isle of Skye’s wild landscapes. We work with the weather, not against it, using passing storms, mist, and breaks of sun to add structure and mood to our images.
Instruction is constant and hands-on, tailored to this itinerary’s opportunities, including long exposures for moving water, managing tripod stability on exposed headlands, balancing shutter speed and texture in moving water, near/far composition along rocky foreshores and loch edges, creating panoramic images of wide vistas, exposure bracketing, and more. Working alongside you, we’ll strengthen your creative vision and teach techniques in composition, camera work, and post-processing that give lasting improvements to your photography.
You’ll return with a portfolio that captures the mood and spirit of the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye, along with practical skills to handle fast-changing weather, complex light, and layered compositions. Most of all, you’ll leave with a clearer vision for photographing atmosphere and place, and the confidence to apply it on any future landscape shoot.
This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
Arrive in Glasgow, Scotland, by 11:00 AM this day, or if you prefer, arrive a day or two earlier to adjust to the time change. We’ll meet at 1:00 PM, drive to Glencoe, photograph the sunset, check in to our hotel, and enjoy a fabulous dinner.
Our location affords us easy access to all the streams, lochs, moors, and mountains we want to photograph: Lochen na h-achlaise at Rannoch Moor, Loch Baa, Buchaille Etive Mor (“the Buckle”), The Three Sisters of Glencoe, and more. We’ll be shooting from before sunrise through sunset as much as possible. We’ll also make time for image reviews to go over composition, image processing, and more.
This morning, we will check out of our hotel to transfer to our lodging on the Isle of Skye. After our ferry ride to Skye, we’ll explore the coast and islands, taking in the sense of isolation. The waves of the Atlantic Ocean pound the white sandy shores of the Hebridean islands off the northwest coast of Scotland, shifting and shaping the sands.
We will spend three days and nights on Skye, photographing its geological wonders. The Old Man of Storr, the Trotternish Ridge, and Elgo are all iconic locations for the landscape photographer. We’ll be out before sunrise and after sunset to catch the magical light that falls on this most ancient of landscapes.
Techniques we will teach and reinforce include: use of neutral density filters for creative effects with waterfalls and the seashore, shooting (and processing) for high dynamic range, panoramas, and more. We will work with you on the art of composition and achieving proper exposure. And we’ll ensure time for reviewing images and Lightroom instruction.
After sunrise, breakfast, and check out, we will have one of our signature image reviews and then leave the Isle of Skye for Eilan Donan Castle in the Highlands. This beautiful 13th Century castle, set out on the water, affords innumerable photographic opportunities, and we’ll explore many of them. We’ll photograph it in the afternoon light and on through sunset light into the blue hour. Dinner and check-in to our hotel will end our final full day of the workshop.
After our morning shoot and breakfast, we will depart for Glasgow Airport. Flights home or elsewhere can be anytime after 4:00 PM.
Many of the hotels we stay in are remote or historical buildings that may lack amenities such as an elevator. We will gladly assist, but all luggage must be carried upstairs.
Moderate: You must be able to do walks of a mile or possibly longer. There will be long days and lots of vehicle travel between locations.
Arrive Glasgow Airport (GLA), Glasgow, Scotland before 11:00 AM on October 24, 2026. Flights out can be made after 4:00 PM on November 2, 2026. Air travel delays are common. Please arrive early, possibly even the day prior, so you don’t miss any of the workshop.
