Slovenia: Autumn Colors in the Julian Alps

Join veteran MW Pro Randy Hanna and be part of a very small group in Slovenia! Experience a range of incredible photographic locations and experiment with a variety of photography techniques on this nine day workshop led by Randy Hanna. With amazing photo-ops all day and night, we’ll travel by comfortable minivan, stay in well-chosen high quality accommodations and eat wonderful food. Co-guiding this workshop will be amazing Slovenian photographer Ana Pogačar.

Discover Slovenia and the Julian Alps with your camera in hand and capture stunning images of mountain landscapes, glacial lakes and rivers, as well as scenes of every day life in traditional villages and the historic city of Ljubljana.

Explore Lake Bled and its iconic church on Bled island starting with sunrise at the shore and ending with sunset from a stunning vantage point. Contrast this with the more tranquil but equally inspiring Lake Bohinj in the heart of the Julian Alps. We’ll shoot creative long exposures to capture fast-flowing rivers and waterfalls at Vintgar Gorge, and travel through many picturesque villages to shoot traditional hayracks and agricultural details, and document a slower pace of life. We’ll photograph the vineyards and stone-built villages of Karst, and the salt pans and seacoast as well. Finally, we discover the warmth and charm of Ljubljana with its contrasting styles of architecture, café culture and bustling riverbank and markets, each day capturing amazing sunrises, sunsets, and night sky as well.

During this workshop, you will learn the finer points of composition and the “art of seeing”. We will spend time in the field helping you with long exposures, panoramas, HDR, and night photography, too. We will also spend time in the classroom where we‘ll do image review and critique and post-processing with Lightroom and Photoshop. Expect to work hard, and learn a lot! We really do put the “work” in workshop!

We are fortunate to have good friend Ana Pogačar as our local guide for this workshop. Here are some of Ana’s photos—nobody shows off the beauty of Slovenia better! We‘ve got a short video for you to watch just below, and to learn more about Slovenia, you can read about it from a native’s perspective, here.

Limited to 8 guests

Muench Workshops far exceed what I would expect which is why this is my second workshop and I will do more. The quality of accommodations, food, photo ops, feedback, great help from the pros, and the settings are worth every penny. They make things work smoothly and seamlessly and in the end, it’s not really a premium, but a real bargain for all that you get!

General Itinerary and Details

October 16, 2017: Arrival at Lake Bled. Arrive in Ljubljana and transfer to Bled. The adventure starts with an afternoon shoot to capture ‘golden light’ at iconic lake Bled. Evening get-together for a welcome dinner and to discuss plans for the tour.

October 17-18, 2017: Lakes Bled and Julian Alps. We’ll take 2 full days to explore the beautiful Gorenjska region starting with a sunrise shoot at the shore of Lake Bled. From Bled Castle, perched up on the cliff top, we’ll capture superb panoramas of the lake with its island and Baroque church. Visit the spectacular Vintgar Gorge, the perfect location to experiment with capturing fast-flowing water and long exposures. Our second glacial lake is Bohinj, which has a very different feel. Here we’ll take time to hone our composition skills at the lakeshore and capture creative reflections. A short drive takes us to the surrounding picturesque villages where you’ll have the opportunity to capture traditional agricultural architecture, including the landmark hayracks of Slovenia, as well as scenes of rural village life. Cap off the evenings with a sunset shoot at the lakeside.

October 19-20, 2017: Karst & Coast. After a morning shoot and breakfast, we drive over highest mountain pass of Slovenia, Vrsic. Scenic drive with photo stops along Soca river valley. Visit of one of the stone-built villages at Karst area, and photograph at autumn-colored vineyards. Late afternoon arrival to Piran to capture sunset over Adriatic sea. We can start our next day by capturing sunrise above Piran, one of the classic Adriatic experiences.  Secovlje saltpans are one of the oldest in the Adriatic, and you can still witness production of salt in a traditional manner. Saltpans are also a great place for landscape photography, especially in the warm afternoon sun.

October 21-22, 2017: Ljubljana and central Slovenia. We leave the coast and head to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia and a gem of a city. During the next two days we’ll wander the charming streets of the old city, camera in hand, and capture the highlights of Ljubljana—including baroque churches, diverse architectural details, the castle itself, as well as trying our hand at some street photography and candid portraits in Ljubljana’s bustling marketplace and café-strewn riverbanks. We’ll also make a half-day trip from the city to capture one of Slovenia’s many scenic locations.

October 23, 2017: Departure from Slovenia. After breakfast, transfers to the airport. Workshop concludes.
