Smoky Mountains in Springtime Photography Workshop

Spring in the Smokies: Misty Mountains, Flowing Creeks, and Verdant Forests in Bloom

April 26 – 30, 2026

  • Sweeping mountain vistas, bubbling streams, and spring wildflowers
  • Photograph iconic sunrises framed by the Smoky Mountains’ blue layers
  • Master wildflower macro, silky waterfalls, and long-lens landscapes

Spring in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a masterclass in atmospheric images. Mist drapes the ridgelines, wildflowers burst into bloom, and rivers swell with fresh snowmelt—creating a landscape that’s soft, moody, and endlessly photogenic. With elevations reaching 6,000 feet, the park’s unique topography and biodiversity make it one of the richest photographic environments in North America.

This workshop puts you in the field at the best times and places to capture it all. We’ll explore iconic locations like Cades Cove and Clingmans Dome, as well as quieter spots chosen for their creative potential. You’ll photograph rushing creeks framed by moss-covered boulders, rolling valleys layered in fog, and intimate details of spring’s awakening forest floor.

You’ll work closely with Muench Workshops Pros to develop your skills across a range of techniques. With a long lens in hand, you’ll learn to compress distance and shape visual tension in your frames—transforming complex ridgelines into bold, graphic compositions. You’ll also experiment with long exposures to capture silky waterfalls, macro techniques for wildflowers, and the creative use of polarizers and ND filters to manage light and reveal texture.

With a small group size and all logistics handled, you’ll spend your time focused on making great images. In-the-field instruction is backed up by image reviews where you’ll get feedback tailored to your goals—helping you grow technically and creatively.

You’ll leave the Smokies with a thoughtful, varied portfolio—and the tools to keep pushing your work forward long after the workshop ends.

I have been on more than a dozen photo workshops since 2013. The Smoky Mountain one was by far the most educational one for pure photography instruction. Richard and Tom were always available to answer questions, provide guidance, and make suggestions. They made the workshop educational and provided a lot of laughs along the way.

Talor had several very good presentations that gave me new insights into editing. Matt's instructions were also especially helpful. Matt's job on stacking and focus blending was very good. I learned so much from them.

I've been to the Smokies (including the National Park) many times but never "saw" the potential for photos to the extent I learned at the Workshop.

The pros proved to be adept at keeping us "on the shots" and were very good at coordinating the group with meals etc. I really liked the way the pros interacted with themselves and with each of the group participants. They are experts, and they are easy to work with and learn from.

I know people would say the workshops are expensive; however, being driven to the shoots and already knowing where to get the best shots, added to the accommodations, food, etc. being all inclusive was nice to not have to nickel and dime everywhere. The best part of all of this, and I've said this to many people, was the group. EVERYONE was so nice, flexible, and enjoyable to be around. We had wonderful talks over our meals and in the cars and helped one another out in the field. When it came time for personal time, I felt like I was able to relax or go for a walk. You can't put a price on that, and I hope all the workshops have such a great group. I know many of them were repeats, which said a lot to me. The instructors included everyone and made us all feel welcome.

The photo critique sessions were very helpful. It was reassuring to see the others' photos as being similar to mine, but everyone had their own flare as well. It was helpful to learn from their work as well my own.

Instruction was available whenever requested. I don't use Lightroom or Photoshop but the instruction provided for these was easily transferrable to my editing software.

I've been on a couple of other workshops with other companies. This was one of the best. Talor and Richard were personable and easy to interact with. They made sure we had plenty of opportunity to seek advice, have questions answered, and get feedback.

I like the workshop model that you use, whereby all local transportation is handled by the workshop leaders. Many workshops have individuals driving their own vehicles from site to site which can lead to some confusion and people getting lost.
