Tasmania, Australia’s “Island State” is a nature photographer’s paradise with its unspoilt landscapes, isolation and vast national parks. Over 20% of the island is protected within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, a haven for nature and wildlife.
This 13-day photography tour starts and finishes in Hobart, Tasmania’s beautiful capital city. The waterfront city with its vibrant cafes and galleries is framed by the majestic kunanyi/Mt Wellington providing a dramatic backdrop. Come and visit unusual locations in the natural wonderland. June is autumn in Tasmania so the dawn and dusk light will be spectacular. You’ll visit waterfalls in the rainforest and rugged coastlines and there’s a good chance to see Wallabies and wombats on Cradle Mountain.
In addition to these amazing locations Tasmania is becoming known as a top destination to see the Southern Lights or Aurora Australis. Our local guide knows the best conditions to see the aurora and if the opportunity arises we’ll head out to capture this incredible phenomenon.
While Tasmania in May can be cold the days are short and filled with soft winter light, it’s a photographer’s dream. Dusk and dawn linger long creating magical light for landscape photography. The southern sky at night is equally spectacular whether lit up by the aurora or just full of stars, it’s not to be missed. We’ll hold our classroom sessions to teach your landscape and low light photography techniques, compositional skills and post processing lessons. Join us on the small group photography trip into the heart of Tasmania.
This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

For the first couple of days, we will use Hobart as our base and take day trips out to some nearby scenic areas, including the Tasman Peninsula, home to stunning sea cliffs reaching 300 meters in height at Cape Pillar. Another day outing will be to Mt Field National Park and its beautiful rainforest and waterfalls, as well as the secluded Styx Valley, home to the world’s tallest trees.
We will have time for another sunrise before we transfer from Hobart to Corinna (Tarkine) We also love to stop the bus and photograph along the way, so we will make sure you’re prepared for the journey.
We visit the Tarkine in Tasmania’s remote north-west. This rugged region, named after the area’s Indigenous people, offers a perfect blend of isolation and comfort. Our adventures include cruising the Pieman River at dawn, capturing mist and reflections in the rainforest-clad waters, as well as photographing sunsets over the plains near Corinna. We’ll immerse ourselves in the ancient rainforest during the day, surrounded by the stillness of this untouched wilderness.
There are many great locations on route to Cradle Mountain. Depending on the conditions, we’ll start early to capture great light or enjoy a nice morning and breakfast. This is another scenic drive filled with landscape opportunities along the way.
A visit to Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake is a must for any trip to Tasmania. These iconic landscapes, located in the heart of the World Heritage Area, are renowned for their beauty. We’ll photograph the dramatic skies at sunrise and sunset over Dove Lake, capturing the changing light and reflections in the water. During the day, we’ll explore hiking tracks that lead to hidden waterfalls and sculptural alpine trees. A visit to a Tasmanian Devil sanctuary will also give us the chance to photograph these elusive creatures in their natural habitat.
It will be difficult leaving Cradle Mountain but we plan to visit the Bay of Fires. We will stop for opportunities to photograph wallabies if we see them.
The final leg of our journey takes us to Tasmania’s east coast, where we’ll photograph the stunning Bay of Fires. Named after the fires seen by early explorers, this area is known for its lichen-covered granite boulders, which create captivating photo opportunities, especially at sunrise.
Transfer back to Hobart. The workshop concludes.
