Waterfall Photography in North Carolina's Majestic Blue Ridge Mountains
June 20 – 24, 2024
The Blue Ridge Mountains are home to an astonishing number of waterfalls, but the ones in the southern part of the range are beyond comparison. During this workshop, we’ll explore some iconic locations and hidden gems at the height of the wildflower bloom when the rhododendrons, mountain laurels, and ferns are at the peak of their glory.
We will be based out of the quaint mountain town of Highlands, North Carolina, which grants us central access to the surrounding region while offering vibrant local culture and cuisine. This is a truly immersive workshop. We will get up close and personal with many of these waterfalls to create powerful compositions while also focusing on the small details to reveal the location’s unique character. Be sure to bring your filters because we’ll be practicing our long-exposure skills to create silky-smooth images of the waterfalls. All of these skills from the field will come together in the classroom when we cover the special editing techniques that go into creating a masterful waterfall image.
This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
June 20, 2024: Arrive at the Asheville airport. We’ll arrange for a ride to Highlands to check into our hotel. After settling in and a welcome orientation, we’ll shoot the famous local highlights, Dry Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, before returning to town for dinner.
June 21, 2024: We will start early in the morning and head to the breathtaking multi-terraced Isaqueena Falls, which features a huge variety of compositions to explore. After lunch, we will explore some lesser-known waterfalls nestled among the rhododendron thickets along the mighty Chattooga River.
June 22, 2024: We will start our morning with a brisk but worthwhile hike to an impressive waterfall. Bring your water shoes because you’ll want to get up close and personal with this beauty! After lunch, we will visit some of our favorite lesser-visited waterfalls, which feature an unbelievable array of white rhododendrons, before ending our day at the overlook of the massive Whitewater Falls.
June 23, 2024: Our morning begins at yet another incredible waterfall featuring multiple cascades and limitless photographic opportunities. After lunch, we will work on post-processing and refining techniques for editing gorgeous waterfall shots. In the evening, we will soak in some panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains to catch some fiery color in the sky.
June 24, 2024: At dawn, we will chase our final waterfall – an absolute hidden gem encircled by breathtaking rhododendrons and mountain laurels. Afterward, we enjoy our last breakfast and bid farewell. The workshop concludes by 11:00 AM.

“Talor was very knowledgable and the critiques were awesome. Talor Stone is a great workshop leader. Really made the workshop fun. Would gladly take another workshop with her as the leader. ”
“Could not have been happier with Talor. She's pleasant, upbeat, super-knowledgeable and full of energy. Being in a vehicle on lengthy drives with her and Lisa was a joy.
So impressed with Talor's ability to demonstrate Lightroom techniques. She spoke for a content-rich hour and a quarter without an "um" or "ya know". ”
