On the west coast of Greenland, the small town of Ilulissat sits beside one of the most incredible natural wonders in the Arctic: the Jakobshavn Glacier, the most productive glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. Here, giant icebergs calve into Disko Bay, towering over 300 feet above the water in ever-changing shapes and tones of blues. The fjords surrounding the bay are a rich ecosystem of whales, seals, and seabirds, and the Inuit communities that live here have a timeless connection to the sea and ice.
Every day we head out by private boat to explore the remote corners of Disko Bay, drifting among the icebergs, photographing reflections in calm channels, and visiting quiet outposts like Oqaatsut and the Eqi Glacier. Our boat has a heated cabin and a large deck, so we can photograph comfortably as we follow the best light and weather. Evenings are spent in a charming hotel overlooking the icefjord, where local Greenlandic food and warm hospitality welcome us back from the field.
Wildlife is part of the rhythm here. We’ll be watching for humpback, minke, and fin whales that frequent these waters in late summer, and we’ll see seabirds hunting alongside the bergs.
Drone photography is encouraged. From the air, ice patterns and glacial melt channels reveal scale and abstraction that’s hard to see from the ground. Late afternoons and evenings bring long, low-angle Arctic light that lasts for hours, giving us time to refine composition and work patiently with motion, texture, and tone.
Throughout the workshop, we’ll combine real-time coaching with focused practice in shooting from a boat, long-lens landscapes, compression, creating scale, safe drone use, aerial composition, and more. You’ll leave with stronger photographic instincts and long-lasting skills in composition, camera technique, and post-processing that will improve your photography well beyond the workshop.
This workshop is shaped by sculpture in motion, with each image capturing a moment in Greenland’s ever-changing Arctic landscape.
This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
Morning flight from Keflavik (KEF) to Ilulissat (JAV), where you’ll be picked up and shuttled to our hotel. After a quick orientation meeting, we will head straight into our adventure and set out for four hours of sunset sailing around Disko Bay to get our first up-close views of the massive icebergs.
We are exploring Disko Bay, in search of whales and icebergs and great light.
We will explore further into Disko Bay in search of stunning icebergs and the humpback whales which gather in large numbers this time of year to feed on the seasonal abundance of krill and small fish.
This day we head north of Ilulissat to the Eqi glacier where we will hopefully witness the powerful calving events in which the giant icebergs are born. The journey to this glacier is stunning, featuring icebergs along the way and mountain views.
During the early afternoon we will shuttle over to the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site for a different perspective of this unique environment. From the hillside you have a sweeping view of the massive amount of ice produced by this glacier and you can often hear the thunder of the ice as it shifts and cracks before you. As evening approaches, we will again take our private boat into Disko Bay to explore the constantly changing icescape.
On this day we will head just north of Ilulissat to visit the small Inuit village of Oqaatsut to have a peek into the traditional Greenlandic way of life. This is one of the smallest villages in Greenland and features traditional huts, Greenlandic sled dogs, and a small fishing community. All along the way there and back we will pass many icebergs and have continuous shooting opportunities
This will be a free day in Ilulissat, plus an intensive post-processing session.
Mid morning flight back to Reykjavik (KEF).
Moderate: You must be able to withstand cold weather, 6 to 8 hours each day on our expedition ship, and walking on uneven ground.
