Photograph the Best of West Greenland from Our Private Sailing Yacht

Our home for seven days of complete photography immersion in beautiful Disko Bay, West Greenland, is our private yacht La Louise. Built and skippered by Thierry Dubois, she is a schooner designed for the exploration and discovery of the great north. Aboard La Louise, we’ll explore West Greenland in Disko Bay, where fjords, glaciers, icebergs, whales, and Inuit villages will be our daily photo ops.

There’s plenty of space aboard with bunk beds divided into two cabins. There are shared bathrooms and a shower. There’s a large sitting area and also a table that can hold all of us comfortably, for amazing culinary delights. The yacht has lots of deck space for shooting, and of course, a zodiac so we can go cruising and land on the shore. Do you have a drone? Bring it, this is a very drone-friendly territory.

Expect to be shooting from early until late, and if lucky with clear skies and good solar activity, we’ll photograph the northern lights. You will learn and fine-tune the “art of seeing” from Michael, as well as learning new ways to process and get the most out of your images in post-processing.

I really liked that Michael gave me assignments and helped me move outside of my comfort zone, and I learned new ways to approach my images. I like that Michael walked us through his Lightroom process. The critiques were very helpful, I enjoyed learning about Michael’s workflow. He had good suggestions for all of the images we reviewed. I really enjoyed seeing and learning by reviewing photographs from others.

Michael did an incredible job managing all the logistics, he had to make tough trade-offs multiple times a day. I think he did an amazing job setting up as many photo opportunities as possible.

Itinerary and General Information

About the Wildlife: This workshop offers significant opportunities for photographing wildlife, and while we do our best to maximize our wildlife encounters—based on past experiences, local knowledge, and the current conditions—we need to impress upon you that the wildlife really is wild and that we don’t control it.

August 27, 2021: Fly to Reykjavik, Iceland (KEF Airport Code). Overnight Reykjavik (hotel included). Group dinner this evening to discuss the week ahead.

August 28, 2021:  After breakfast, we taxi to the airport for our flight to Ilulissat, Greenland. This is a specific Air Iceland Connect flight that we will tell you to book. On arrival in Ilulissat, we’ll transfer directly to our yacht, La Louise.

August 28–September 4, 2021: Sailing, photographing, dining, and living aboard La Louise. The boat and the itinerary are ours to determine. We will set mealtimes around photography, not the other way around. We have a zodiac on board so that we can head ashore anytime we like. We will spend our time photographing the ice formations, icebergs, glaciers, coastal landscapes, mountains, and, if lucky, wildlife such as whales, seals, Arctic fox, and birds. With clear skies and good solar activity, we hope to photograph the northern lights as well! Oh, and we plan a village stop to photograph the people and colorful houses in the small town of Oqaatsut.

September 4, 2021: We fly from Ilulissat (JAV) back to Reykjavik City Airport (RKV). Overnight Reykjavik (hotel included). And a final dinner this evening to celebrate our West Greenland Expedition.

September 5, 2021: Flights home anytime this day from Keflavik Airport (KEF).
