White Sands
October 31 – November 3, 2023
White Pocket is the underlying beauty of our planet laid bare. Part of a more extensive series of formations on the Pariah Plateau in America’s Southwest, substantial erosion has revealed incredible swirling layers of sandstone. This workshop is a backcountry experience of one of the most unusual and photogenic geologic formations in the region. Vermilion Cliffs National Monument has many other great subjects, and we will explore them, as well as the multi-colored Chinle formations near the movie town of Paria.
We’ll spend two nights in our fully-outfitted remote camp, where you’ll have plenty of time to explore the sandstone formations and the surrounding plains. We’ll also spend three nights in Moab Arizona, where we’ll conduct our signature image reviews and provide instruction on post-processing in Adobe Lightroom. You’ll learn techniques for composing your images, focus stacking, using neutral density filters, and more.
Our camp complies with all the standards of a National Monument commercial use permit.

October 15, 2022: Arrive today to Page, Arizona. We’ll gather in the afternoon to discuss the following days’ activities, followed by a welcome dinner.
October 16, 2022: Our first morning will begin with a sunrise shoot at the clay hills (Chinle Formation) outside Paria. We’ll then have breakfast in the field, followed by further exploration of the region. We’ll then hike into one of the more unusual sandstone formations in the swell, where (weather permitting) we’ll spend the rest of the afternoon exploring and photographing. After sunset, we’ll return to Page for dinner, followed by an image review.
October 17, 2022: This morning we’ll depart Page early for White Pocket. Expect a lovely drive through red desert landscapes. Once the group reaches camp, there will be time to settle in, have lunch, and take an orientation walk. White Pocket takes time to explore so we’ve allowed plenty of time for that today. Since we have a fully outfitted camp for two full nights, we’ll have lots of opportunity to capture the formation in varied light.
October 18, 2022: We’ll continue to explore the White Pocket area, with plans for both sunrise and sunset shoots.
October 19, 2022: Our last morning in camp, and a last opportunity to capture sunrise over White Pocket. After breakfast, we’ll pack up and head back to town for hot showers and a comprehensive image review.
October 20, 2022: Weather permitting, we’ll have a last sunrise shoot near Page. The workshop concludes after breakfast and you are welcome to schedule flights home at any time today.
Moderate: Walking on uneven desert for up to 2 miles

“Just finished and amazing workshop with Greg and Tom at Yellowstone and Tetons! They gave fantastic input and thoughtfully challenged us while taking us to spectacular locations. My skills were sharpened and my soul was nourished!!!!
This was one of the most intentionally instructive workshops I have attended. I really filled in some gaps I had in my photographic knowledge and also was given a lot to think about and to practice. I am very appreciative. ”
