Under the Milky Way in the Wild Utah Outback
Come photograph Utah’s expansive night skies and the waning crescent moon over stunning landscapes. Led by Muench Workshops’ Wayne Suggs, you will learn his techniques for capturing images that will make jaws drop.
Our fully-outfitted campsites in The San Rafael Swell and Cathedral Valley will place us in precisely the right place to capture the beauty of this stark landscape under the moonlight. Weather permitting, these will be perfect conditions and location to photograph night skies.
Don’t worry, we won’t be roughing it. We’ll be camping “Muench-style” which means sturdy tents, with raised cots and comfortable mattresses. Our outfitters will have separate kitchen and dining tents set up, so you can expect delicious food.
You can expect to be shooting long into the cool nights, learning how to compose, focus, and expose your images, in the dark. We’ll be exploring creative ways to light the scene and highlight the landscape’s features. You can also count on some intensive classroom time learning the best techniques for processing your night sky images. Wayne will teach his signature methods for blending multiple files in Lightroom and Photoshop, and David will make sure everyone’s questions are answered. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn from the night sky experts!
August 29–September 5, 2021
Itinerary and General Information
August 29, 2021: Arrive in Grand Junction, Colorado (GJT) before 5:00 PM this day. We’ll meet for a group dinner at 6:00 PM.
August 30–31, 2021: We’ll start the morning with an introductory Lightroom session. Then, at noon, we’ll head out to our first fully-outfitted campsite along the slopes of the San Rafael Swell. This significant geologic feature—it includes both the San Rafael Reef and Goblin Valley—provides an opportunity to photograph hoodoos and other unusual desert forms.
September 1, 2021: After breakfast, we’ll leave camp for the Red Sands Inn in Torrey, UT. After a bit of a rest and a hot shower, we’ll have our first critique session of the workshop. We’ll review the images you’ve shot so far, and learn new techniques in Lightroom and Photoshop. Later in the evening, we’ll head back out to Capitol Reef National Park to practice what we’ve learned.
September 2, 2021: We’ll have an opportunity to sleep this morning, after a long evening under the stars the night before. We’ll have a private meeting room arranged today where we’ll work on new post-processing techniques taught by Wayne and David. We’ll end the day with a sunset shoot at Hickman Bridge.
September 3, 2021: After a sunrise shoot and breakfast, we’ll meet our outfitters at our second campsite in Cathedral Valley, where we will stay for one night. This is a stunning area, with excellent photographic opportunities at night, sunrise and sunset, and throughout the day. Photographic highlights here include the Temple of the Sun and the Temple of the Moon, sandstone monoliths that resemble cathedrals. We’ll be camping here for one night; plan for a very full evening of shooting.
September 4, 2021: This morning we’ll head to the Doubletree Hotel Grand Junction, stopping en route for shooting. On arrival, we’ll have another critique session to review the images from the second half of the workshop. We’ll also use this classroom time to reinforce some of the techniques we’ve learned in post-processing.
September 5, 2021: We will have a final post-processing session from 8–11:00 AM. This will be a chance to finish your work on merging images with Wayne and David’s help. Flights home from (GJT) airport can be scheduled for any time today after 2:00 PM.
