Under the Milky Way in the Wild Utah Outback
Utah’s high desert region is renowned for its clear, expansive skies, unmarred by light pollution. Only fitting then, that we hold our Wild Utah Night Skies Workshop here! Join Muench Workshops pros Michael Strickland and Wayne Suggs for three nights of photography in Capitol Reef National Park’s Cathedral Valley and The San Rafael Swell—we’ll have a fully outfitted camp set up so you never have to be very far from the action! Don’t worry, though, we won’t be roughing it—camping "Muench-style" means fully-outfitted tents, with sturdy cots and comfortable mattresses. We’ll even set up a separate kitchen and dining tent, so you can expect delicious food.
This workshop is scheduled during a waning crescent phase of the moon, the optimal time to photograph the Milky Way in the Northern Hemisphere. You’ll be up long hours during the cool and dark nights, learning how to properly compose and expose your images, and the creative use of lights to highlight landscape features. There will be time during daylight hours for rest, of course, but we’ve also scheduled a private meeting room for our signature image reviews and post-processing instruction. It’s here that Wayne will teach his signature methods for blending multiple files in Lightroom and Photoshop, and Michael will make sure everyone’s questions are answered. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn from the night sky experts!
Muench Workshops is an Authorized Permittee of the National Park Service.
September 13–20, 2020
Itinerary and General Information
September 13, 2020: Arrive in Grand Junction, Colorado (GJT) before 5:00 PM this day. We’ll meet for a group dinner at 6:00 PM.
September 14–15, 2020: We’ll start the morning with an introductory Lightroom session. Then, at noon, we’ll head out to our first fully-outfitted campsite in Cathedral Valley, where we will stay for the next two nights. This is a stunning area, with excellent photographic opportunities at night, sunrise and sunset, and throughout the day. Photographic highlights here include the Temple of the Sun and the Temple of the Moon, sandstone monoliths that resemble cathedrals.
September 16, 2020: After breakfast, we’ll leave camp for the Red Sands Inn in Torrey, UT. After a bit of a rest and a hot shower, we’ll have our first critique session of the workshop, reviewing the images you’ve shot so far, and learning new techniques in Lightroom and Photoshop. Later in the evening, we’ll head back out to Capitol Reef National Park to practice what we’ve learned.
September 17, 2020: We’ll have an opportunity to sleep this morning, after a long evening under the stars the night before. We’ll have a private meeting room arranged today where we’ll work on new post-processing techniques taught by Wayne and Michael.
September 18, 2020: After a sunrise shoot and breakfast, we’ll meet our outfitters at our second camping location along the slopes of the San Rafael Swell. This large geologic feature—it includes both the San Rafael Reef and Goblin Valley—provides opportunity to photograph hoodoos and other interesting desert forms. We’ll be camping here for one night; plan for a very full evening of shooting.
September 19, 2020: This morning we’ll head to the Doubletree Hotel Grand Junction, stopping en route for shooting. On arrival, we’ll have another critique session to review the images from the second half of the workshop. We'll also use this classroom time to reinforce some of the techniques we’ve learned in post-processing.
September 20, 2020: We will have a final post processing session from 8–11:00 AM. This will be a chance to finish your work on merging images with Wayne and Michael’s help. Flights home from (GJT) airport can be scheduled for any time today after 2:00 PM.
