Winter Bull Moose of Wyoming Photography Workshop

Bull moose and other wildlife in the winter landscapes of the Grand Tetons

December 3 – 6, 2026

  • Bull moose in winter landscapes of Grand Teton National Park
  • Bison, elk, swans, and raptors in Wyoming’s winter valleys
  • Instruction-focused photography experience with two pros

Winter in the Jackson area offers a powerful mix of wildlife and landscape photography. This workshop is timed to maximize opportunities to photograph bull moose in snowy environments, while also taking advantage of the region’s wide variety of winter wildlife and the dramatic backdrop of the Tetons.

You will work in a small, focused group with two pro instructors, spending time each morning and afternoon in the field. The goal is not simply to photograph animals, but to strengthen your ability to read light, anticipate wildlife behavior, and make compositional decisions that reflect both subject and setting.

In this workshop, you will combine technical control with creative decision-making to strengthen your wildlife photography. Instruction focuses on exposure strategies for snowy scenes, lens choice for both intimate and environmental portraits, and compositions that balance subject and habitat. Through careful observation and guided field time, you will learn to anticipate animal behavior and position yourself for those fleeting moments hard to capture.

On the cold winter mornings, we’ll meet before sunrise and head into the valley in search of moose and other wildlife, working through changing light and conditions as the day unfolds. After returning to town for breakfast, we regroup for image reviews and discussion before heading back into the field in the afternoon. This workshop is designed for photographers who value meaningful instruction, thoughtful time with wildlife, and those of want to gain the confidence to make creative decisions in challenging winter light.

Itinerary

About the wildlife: This workshop offers significant opportunities for photographing wildlife, and while we do our best to maximize our wildlife encounters—based on past experiences, local knowledge, and the current conditions—we need to impress upon you that the wildlife really is wild and that we don’t control it.

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

December 3, 2026: Arrive at Jackson Hole Airport (JAC), Jackson, Wyoming before 12:00 PM today. Air travel delays are common. Please arrive early, possibly even the day prior, so you don’t miss any of the workshop.

After meeting at the hotel, we will review the plan for the coming days, discuss wildlife behavior and conditions in the valley, and prepare for our first sunset shoot.

December 4–5, 2026: These are full days focused on photographing wildlife in the winter landscapes of Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge. We head into the field early each morning in search of bull moose and other wildlife as the first light reaches the valley. After a break and short image review around midday, we return to the field in the afternoon and evening as animals become active again and light improves.

December 6, 2026: On our final morning, we head out early for one last wildlife photography session. After returning to Jackson, we gather for a final image review before departures.

Flights out can be made after 3:00 PM on December 6, 2026.

This workshop provided excellent opportunities to photograph both wildlife and landscapes, striking a good balance between the two. As expected, wildlife photography can be unpredictable, but Kathy’s deep knowledge of the park allowed her to make adjustments on the fly to help us locate wildlife.

Richard is great. He is knowledgeable, professional, has a pleasant demeanor, great timing. He is focused on helping people rather than being consumed with his own picture taking. I would take another workshop with Richard.

I view the images I created at this workshop as a testament to all that I have learned from Muench Workshops' instructors over the past 10 years in almost 20 different Muench workshops.

Richard Bernabe is very knowledgeable about photography and has a very personable teaching style, which I greatly appreciated. As an educator, I admired his ability to provide instruction that matched everyone's individual ability level. I know that I learned a lot from Richard and could tell from seeing other group members' pictures, their photographic skills had improved as well.
