Yellowstone and Tetons

Any description of Yellowstone will be filled with superlatives; first National Park in the world, greatest concentration of thermal features in the world, up until recently the largest National Park in the lower 48 states, home to the largest Bison herd in the world, and of course, it is home to, perhaps, the most famous geyser in the world, Old Faithful.

The Grand Tetons is one of the most spectacular mountain massifs in the lower 48 states, and because it's proximity to Yellowstone these two national parks must be visited on the same trip.

Fall is a magical time in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Parks. The landscape is going through a transformation, animals are out and about, getting ready for winter. On this workshop you will be guided by two accomplished workshop leaders,  Greg Vaughn and Tom Kirkendall. Greg and Tom have been leading workshops together in Yellowstone and the Tetons for many years.

We have put together an intense schedule in order to experience everything these two iconic parks have to offer. We will travel thru the famed Lamar Valley, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, Old Faithful and Grand Teton National Park. We will stay at and experience the historic Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone as well as The Jackson Lake Lodge in Grand Tetons.

During this workshop we will have the opportunity to make some great images of some of the most inspiring scenic vistas in North America and the high probability of photographing some of the many animals in the parks, bears, moose, bison, wolves, elk, pronghorn, pikas, mountain goats, big horn sheep, and more!

Greg especially was great. He gave as much attention as each of us wanted, in the depth that we each wanted, and at a level appropriate to our skills. He is an excellent teacher as well as a superior photographer.

Itinerary and General Information

September 26, 2019: Arrive in Bozeman, MT (BZN airport code) anytime before 2:00 PM. We'll pick you up at the airport and bring you to the hotel in Gardiner. At a time TBD, we'll meet for Introductions and group dinner where we'll talk about the exciting week of photography ahead.

September 27–28, 2019: Sunrise at or near Mammoth Hot Springs followed by breakfast. We'll leave the Mammoth Hot Springs area and drive south into Yellowstone National Park to the Old Faithful Inn, where we'll spend two nights exploring the many geyser basins in the region including, Old Faithful Basin and Grand Prismatic Basin.

September 29–30, 2019: Sunrise near Old Faithful followed by a good hearty breakfast. We'll then explore further south and leave Yellowstone National Park and enter Grand Teton National Park. We'll be staying at the Jackson Lake Lodge for two nights, giving us access to many great landscape locations with views of the Grand Tetons, Mount Moran, Snake River and many of the beautiful lakes in the region. One morning we’ll leave early to catch sunrise along the Snake River with the beautiful early light striking the Grand Tetons. After breakfast we’ll have some down time to catch up on post processing and have one of our signature image review sessions. Sunset location will be based on local conditions, but with so many to choose from, there is plenty to shoot in any kind of weather.

October 1–2, 2019: Following sunrise in Grand Teton National Park and breakfast, we’ll head back north through Yellowstone to Gardiner, stopping at the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, and possibly other geyser basins, depending on weather and conditions. Of course we hope to find awesome wildlife in the landscape. We’ll rise early to spend the morning in Lamar Valley looking for wildlife and landscapes. We’ll spend the day in this area in hopes of great wildlife and amazing sunset light. This is the time of year the Elk will be in rut, giving us the opportunity to capture them in this strikingly wild valley. The Lamar Valley is the tributary to the Yellowstone River and is about 40 miles of amazing meadows broken by stands of pines and cottonwoods, surrounded by rolling mountains and home to herds of elk, bison, grizzlies and several packs of wolves.

October 3, 2019: We'll spend our last morning photographing sunrise in one of the many locations near Gardiner. We'll have another hearty breakfast before packing up, checking out and driving back to Bozeman for flights home.
