When it comes to trying something new, there’s often a moment of nerves, excitement, and curiosity right before you dive into the deep end. That’s exactly the point where our new Florida snorkeling workshops begins.
This isn’t like other photography workshops! It’s an invitation to step beyond your comfort zone, slip beneath the surface, and discover a creative world that very few photographers ever explore. In doing so, you’ll discover new skills and fresh perspectives that are sure to invigorate your photography journey. And the best part? It’s far more accessible and safe than you might think!
On this Florida snorkeling workshop, you can expect the same world-class Muench experience that we provide on all of our photography workshops around the world: unbelievable locations, safe encounters, thoughtful planning, and hands-on field instruction. Before you even arrive, we will guide you through renting or purchasing the perfect gear setup, so you feel confident and prepared right from the start. On location, our ultra-small group size, limited to just four guests, will ensure you never feel lost in the crowd and will receive personalized instruction tailored to your specific skill level and photographic goals.
And yes! We will be taking you into the water! Our workshop journey begins in the crystal-clear freshwater springs of Florida, home to one of the gentlest and endearing marine mammals on the planet – the manatee!
If you’ve never floated eye to eye with a manatee, it’s pretty hard to describe the feeling. While manatees are strictly protected from direct human contact, they definitely didn’t get the memo! Manatees are peaceful, curious, and ridiculously adorable, which means that our cuddly subjects will often choose to approach us on their own terms to inspect your underwater camera housing dome. Seriously, there is nothing more adorable than trying to take photographs while a baby manatee hugs your leg or nibbles at your fins.
Photographing manatees is the perfect introduction to underwater shooting. They’re slow, they’re patient, and they give you time to adjust your settings, refine your compositions, and get comfortable with your gear. There’s no rush as we will have all day with them. Just quiet moments of connection in a safe, controlled environment with lots of hands-on instruction. The hardest part of photographing manatees is saying goodbye to our new buddies at the end of each day.
With multiple sessions in the springs, you’ll get dialed in on your buoyancy, master your camera controls, and learn to understand the nuances of light and focus while underwater. All along, I’ll be right beside you, ensuring you’re comfortable and capturing amazing images of these charismatic animals. Once you’re fully comfortable, that’s when the next chapter begins!
Halfway into the workshop, it’s to meet one of Florida’s most iconic animals – the shark! Look, I know… I know. But seriously, just hear me out.
Sharks get a pretty bad rap, but I’m here to let you in on a secret. They are NOTHING like what Hollywood fiction wants you to believe! The sharks we will encounter off Florida’s coast are not mindless predators. They are intelligent, curious, and elegant animals that play an important role in ocean ecosystems. One snorkel session with these guys will totally change everything you thought you knew about sharks.
Our snorkeling sessions always take place under carefully managed conditions with experienced shark handlers in the water. Your safety and comfort are our priority and there will always be someone next to you watching over and guiding interactions, so you can focus on your camera to create fantastic images! What you’ll quickly discover is that sharks are just as charismatic as the adorable manatees and each individual is full of personality and willing to peacefully coexist right alongside you.
Now, I won’t lie. When you first slip into the water, you’ll certainly feel a rush of adrenaline. But within moments, that rush will transform to awe. It’s hard to imagine a more elegant and perfectly evolved animal and to be able to peacefully and safely share space with them is an absolute privilege that is difficult to describe in words. It’s a moment that just must be experienced for yourself.
Bull sharks are common here and they are truly powerful, athletic, and extremely photogenic. But my personal favorite? Lemon sharks. Their warm golden coloration is stunning against the clear blue ocean backdrop, and their inquisitive and friendly disposition always guarantees you’ll get plenty of unforgettable close passes. Florida also has many other shark species, so you never know exactly what you’ll get. That makes every outing unique and exciting.
And yet, even in this exciting environment, your experience remains calm and structured. We start the workshop with those gentle manatee sessions precisely so that when we meet the sharks, you’ll be confident with your camera so you can focus on your creativity.
Without a doubt, underwater photography can be challenging, but you won’t be doing it alone. With only four participants, you’ll receive constant feedback and hands-on guidance. If something isn’t working, we adjust. If you’re unsure, we troubleshoot. If nerves creep in, we pause, breathe, and reset. Growth happens fastest when you feel supported — and that’s exactly the environment we cultivate. In a carefully managed learning environment, you will settle in, enjoy our close wildlife encounters, and walk away with some killer images, too!
Top 5 Tips for Underwater Photography
If you’ve been curious about learning underwater photography, I’ll leave you with 5 Tips for getting started. Then come jump into the Florida waters with me and use these lessons in the field!
- Make a Checklist – Underwater photography introduces a lot of new must-do settings that are important to get right. A pre-snorkel checklist prevents costly mistakes before you even jump into the water. During our workshop, I’ll share the checklist I’ve refined over the years to make sure you never miss a beat.
- Set Up Early – Preparation creates calm. Assemble and test your gear well before each session, so you’re relaxed and focused when it’s time to swim.
- Practice Often – There’s nothing more valuable than repetition. That’s why this snorkeling workshop features multiple sessions to ensure these skills become second nature.
- Ask For Help – Underwater photography is an exciting new world, and there will be times you feel out of your depth (pun intended). While YouTube can be useful, there’s really no replacement for hands-on instruction tailored to your exact scenario and taught in a way you connect with.
- Breathe – There’s a lot happening when you’re taking pictures underwater. You have to manage your camera and your body while also thinking about how to compose and expose your images. That’s why it’s so important to just take a breath and settle before you start working. When I dive into the water, I always pause for a couple of minutes to settle my mind and body and evaluate my surroundings. When I feel centered and relaxed, I know I’ll take way better pictures!
This blog is just meant to dip your toe into the world of underwater photography, but there’s so much to learn and love about this exciting genre. Most of all, I want to encourage you to try something new! Step out of your comfort zone and off the sidelines. Underwater photography is for everyone, so come dive into Florida’s waters with me and meet some of its most iconic wildlife in a safe and structured learning environment.
