Neil Protheroe

Neil is originally from the UK. After an extensive career in the hospitality industry there, in France, the US, and most recently New Zealand, he has now made his home in Blenheim on the South Island, where he runs small photography workshops, online coaching, guiding, and hosting visitors to the country. There aren’t many parts of the South Island which he does not know intimately.

Neil has been photographing from a very early age, encouraged and taught by his father, who once worked for Kodak. His passion for capturing the natural beauty of the landscape around him was particularly reinvigorated with the advent of digital photography. He has traveled extensively, and in addition to now selling his collection of fine art images to clients around the world, Neil’s work has been featured in many newspapers, travel magazines and journals, and is often seen at international conferences and trade shows, as part of Tourism New Zealand’s international sales and marketing programs. Neil shoots with Nikon and Fujifilm mirrorless systems.

P.S. Did you know that Neil’s favorite camera feature is focus peaking? Learn more about Neil and his approaches to photography by visiting his “Meet the Pro” page.

Testimonials

Michelle C.
Colors of Provence and Camargue Horses
Neil’s fluency in French was a true superpower. Not only did it break the ice with the locals, but I’m fairly certain it charmed half the village’s women. His rapport with the community opened doors — literally and figuratively — to experiences that would’ve been impossible otherwise. We found ourselves invited into private stables, granted after-hours access to bird sanctuaries, and serenaded by live Flamenco music, all thanks to Neil’s local connections and Jedi-level charisma.

Neil fulfilled all the criteria I wish for in a workshop. He took me to places I’d not find on my own, was tireless in his effort, and had a wonderful sense of humor and attention to the needs of everyone in the group.

I learned A LOT! Neil is a patient and skilled instructor who was able to communicate his suggestions and critiques in a thoughtful and clear way.

Neil is a down-to-earth, accessible teacher, and had ideas and suggestions for newer photographers as well as more advanced photographers. His style lends itself to very supportive yet actionable critiques. The dynamic also led to very participative/collaborative sessions, where the feedback and ideas were not just coming from Neil but from other clients as well.
