Caddo Lake Photography Workshop

Landscape Photography in the Heart of the Bayou

November 8 – 12, 2027

  • Cypress trees draped in moss cast eerie reflections on the water
  • Shoot from flat-bottomed boats for an intimate view of flora and fauna
  • Lots of golden-hour shooting, and our signature image review sessions

At dawn, a quiet settles over Caddo Lake, and mist drifts between towering cypress trees draped in silver Spanish moss. Their roots rise from still, tea-colored water, glowing red and orange in autumn light. Egrets lift from hidden channels, wood ducks ripple the reflections, and the quiet hum of the bayou seems to suspend time. This is one of the world’s largest flooded cypress forests, a place that feels timeless and perfect for photographers drawn to mood, texture, and atmosphere.

We’ll explore this extraordinary wetland from shallow-bottom boats, gliding through narrow waterways and open groves. The slow pace allows time to study changing light and find strong compositions among trunks, reflections, and layers of fog. You’ll learn how to work with low contrast and subtle color, as well as how to use focal length and perspective to turn this complex environment into clean, compelling images.

Your instructors will be beside you each day at sunrise and sunset, helping refine camera settings for fog and reflections, manage exposure in backlit conditions, and anticipate fleeting moments when light cuts through the haze. When not on the water, we’ll review images and work in Lightroom, focusing on color balance, subtle tonal control, and preserving atmosphere in the final edit.

You’ll leave with a portfolio that captures the mysterious beauty of Caddo Lake, along with sharper technical control, stronger composition skills, and a renewed sensitivity to mood and light in your photography.

Itinerary

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

November 8, 2027: Airport Greeting and Sunset Photography

Arrive at the airport in Shreveport, Louisiana, no later than 11:00 AM. We will meet you there and then transport you to our hotel in nearby Marshall, Texas. After a quick orientation, we will head out onto the water for our first afternoon and sunset shooting session!

November 9–12, 2027: Misty Cypress Morning Shoots, Wildlife Encounters, Golden Afternoon Light

We will spend every sunrise on the water shooting the mysterious cypress trees as they appear from the mist. Always have a long lens at the ready because wildlife sightings are frequent, and you won’t want to miss a shot! In the afternoons, you can count on us hitting the water again to take advantage of the dramatic light as it streams through the trees and turns the Spanish moss to gold. We’ll have our signature image reviews in the evenings and during other downtimes. During one of these days, we will also have a very long post-processing and feedback session.

November 12, 2027: Final Sunrise Cypress Quest, Checkout, Return to Shreveport

On our final day, we will have our last sunrise session on the water, where we will hunt for stunning and colorful cypress trees. After breakfast and checkout we will return to Shreveport in time for flights departing after 2:00 PM.

It was good to receive evaluations of our chosen photos and she took time to suggest post-processing changes. Criticism was delivered in a positive way. No one felt embarrassed or offended. She also gave us the opportunity for individual instruction if we needed extra help with equipment.
