This Masai Mara photography safari in Kenya takes you deep into one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations—a vast and biodiverse ecosystem stretching from southwest Kenya into northern Tanzania. Known for its sweeping savannas, acacia-dotted plains, and winding rivers, the Masai Mara National Reserve and surrounding conservancies are home to the Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest, zebra, and antelope move with the rains. Designed for photographers seeking immersive wildlife photography experiences in Kenya, this photo safari workshop offers unparalleled opportunities to capture the natural behavior of lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, and other predators in the golden light of the African savannah. Guided by professional wildlife photographers and expert local guides, you’ll learn field techniques, composition, and storytelling in one of the richest ecosystems on Earth—perfect for building a world-class African wildlife photography portfolio while experiencing the soul of the Masai Mara.
You will spend four days in a private conservancy within the greater Masai Mara, where we focus on quieter areas that offer more intimate and unhurried encounters. Game drives start before sunrise to catch first light and peak wildlife activity, followed by a midday break to rest, recharge, and review your images. In the afternoon, we head back out to work the warm tones and long shadows of golden hour into dusk.
From the Masai, a short private flight takes you to Ol Doinyo Lomboro, a remote private reserve in northern Kenya. Here, you will spend two nights at a comfortable camp inside the reserve, with exclusive access to its rugged, semi-arid savannah. We’ll have a rare opportunity to spend two full days in a private reserve with a high density of leopards, seeking the best photographic moments. But these magnificent cats won’t be our only focus. Throughout our stay, and always accompanied by expert trackers with deep knowledge of the terrain, we’ll search for lions, African elephants, Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, vulturine guineafowl, and many other species—some of them rare and endemic to the semi-arid savannahs of the Horn of Africa. With patience and a bit of luck, we may even encounter the region’s famous black leopard that has captured the imagination of photographers worldwide.
The seven-day itinerary runs Sunday through Saturday, which helps minimize time away from the office while still giving you a full, focused safari experience.
This workshop is designed to build confidence in every aspect of your wildlife photography. Whether you are mastering focus on fast-moving subjects or learning how to capture wildlife behavior and motion, your pros are there beside you in the vehicle. Through in-field guidance, image reviews, and discussions, you will develop photographic instincts and a clearer sense of how to shape a cohesive wildlife portfolio.
Our small, comfortable camps sit in prime game-viewing areas, close to the action yet peaceful and welcoming at the end of each day. You can expect excellent food, warm hospitality, and a team of experienced local guides who know these lands and their wildlife intimately. Throughout the safari, we prioritize respect for the animals, the land, and the communities that live here, working at a thoughtful pace that lets you slow down, observe, and create images that go beyond a typical safari to show the quieter, more personal stories of safari in Kenya.

About the wildlife: This workshop offers significant opportunities for photographing wildlife, and while we do our best to maximize our wildlife encounters—based on past experiences, local knowledge, and the current conditions—we need to impress upon you that the wildlife really is wild and that we don’t control it.
This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
Arrive into Nairobi, Kenya (NBO) by 5:00 PM. We’ll pick you up and take you to our hotel for a relaxing day.
Over the next three days, you’ll delve deep into the Naboisho Conservancy. This private reserve is co-managed by local Maasai communities, who have implemented strict conservation rules to protect both wildlife and habitat. Thanks to their stewardship, what was once overgrazed land has become one of Africa’s top destinations for observing large predators, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs. In fact, Naboisho boasts one of the highest lion densities on the continent, giving you exceptional opportunities to spend extended time with these majestic cats.
But lions aren’t the only stars of this landscape. Naboisho is also one of the best places in the Maasai Mara to spot the elusive leopard. With the help of your expert guides, you’ll track them by reading subtle signs—fresh paw prints in the dust, the sudden silence of birds, or the distant alarm call of an impala. Your safari here is slow and intentional: immersive, respectful, and guided by a deep understanding of animal behavior.
You’ll spend two days exploring Ol Doinyo Lomboro’s private reserve, a rugged landscape of rocky outcrops, dry riverbeds, and open savannah known for its high density of leopards and remarkably diverse wildlife. Early mornings and late afternoons are dedicated to time in the field, working these cats in beautiful low-angle light, while the midday hours are reserved for rest, downloading, image reviews, and post-processing sessions with your pros.
With the support of expert local trackers who know this terrain intimately, we’ll search not only for leopards but also for lions, elephants, and other classic savannah species, along with northern Kenya specialties such as Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, and vulturine guineafowl.
With some patience and luck, there is also the possibility of encountering the region’s famous melanistic (black) leopard, as well as habituated African wild dogs if they are in the area during our stay.
Today, we say farewell to Kenya—though it may be with a touch of sadness. A small private plane will take us back to Nairobi, marking the end of our safari. To ensure a smooth and comfortable conclusion to our journey, we’ve reserved day rooms at a hotel close to the airport, where we can freshen up and rest before our international flights.
This safari is designed for time-conscious travelers—working professionals and busy retirees alike—who want a focused, high-yield photographic experience without a long time commitment. Four nights in a private Maasai Mara conservancy let you settle into this internationally acclaimed reserve; two nights at Shompole's water-level hide provide multiple day-and-night sessions at eye level. Private flights between camps keep travel times short, so more of your week is spent in the field.
For many U.S.-based guests, a Friday evening departure typically arrives in Nairobi late Saturday or Sunday morning—ready for Sunday's charter to the Masai Mara. Returning on Saturday often gets you back to the U.S. on Sunday afternoon or evening, aligning with a Monday schedule.
Kenya Airways operates a year-round non-stop service between New York (JFK) and Nairobi (NBO). One-stop options via Doha on Qatar Airways—and other hubs such as Amsterdam or London—are also widely available with short connections. Flight timings vary by departure city, airline, season, and connection—always confirm schedules with your carrier, and consider adding a buffer night if you prefer extra margin.
Imagine staying in a luxury hotel—only you're surrounded by the breathtaking wilderness of the Masai Mara. We also value exclusivity and isolation, avoiding areas crowded with vehicles so you can feel like the land is yours, with wildlife appearing just for you.
rYour accommodations are spacious and bright, with twin or queen beds, high thread-count linens, storage space, a sitting area, a verandah, and en suite bathrooms with hot showers, toilets, and sinks. These elegant, airy tents offer all the comforts you need while keeping you connected to nature.r
Our days start early, just before sunrise. After a quick coffee or tea (maybe with a cookie), we'll head out on our first game drive to catch the animals as they stir with the day's first light. Depending on the sightings, we'll stay out for several hours, often enjoying breakfast in the field to maximise our time with the wildlife. Back at camp, the midday is yours for relaxing, offloading your images, or taking advantage of one-on-one instruction. You can read, take a walk, or simply rest and recharge. Lunch will be served, and in the late afternoon, we'll head out again, chasing the best sightings as the golden light sets the stage for stunning photographs.
After sundown, you'll return to camp for a hot shower and join us by the campfire or in the living area for cocktails before a delicious dinner featuring both familiar dishes and local specialties. Any dietary requirements will be accommodated with care.r
Our custom Land Cruisers are designed for photographers, with ample space for gear, excellent visibility, and only one photographer per row. Daily laundry service is available at all camps except on travel days.r
