Kenya is one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife destinations, where vast savannahs, hidden valleys, and riverine forests come alive with the rhythm of predators and prey. This ten-day photographic journey is designed to showcase the very best of the country’s biodiversity—from the leopard-rich highlands of Laikipia to the untamed solitude of Shompole and the legendary big-cat country of the Maasai Mara.
You’ll begin in the rugged landscapes of Laikipia, where open plains and acacia woodlands are home to elephants, lions, Grevy’s zebras, and reticulated giraffes. This is also one of the best places in Africa to photograph leopards, often in complete solitude, guided by trackers whose deep knowledge of the land and its wildlife make each game drive an intimate and photographically rewarding experience.
Next, we take a private flight to the Shompole Conservancy, a remote and private reserve near the Tanzanian border. Here, an underground hide offers a rare opportunity to photograph wildlife at eye level, from elephants and lions to more elusive nocturnal visitors like striped hyenas, caracals, and leopards.
We conclude in the Maasai Mara, exploring one of the most wildlife-dense ecosystems on Earth. Lions stretch on granite kopjes, cheetahs stalk across golden grasslands, and elephants move silently through the dawn light. Our camp sits in a quieter region, allowing for unhurried game drives and meaningful encounters away from the crowds in an area where off-road driving is allowed.
We handpicked each location for its photographic potential and authenticity. Every day is timed to make the most of golden light and peak animal activity, with midday breaks for rest, our signature image reviews (using our proprietary software), and post-processing sessions. With just six guests, two vehicles, and expert instruction from two pros throughout, you’ll have space to focus on composition, behavior, and storytelling of these unique ecosystems.
Continue your adventure with a post-trip Primates and Predators workshop in Uganda, spending time with gorillas and chimpanzees.

About the wildlife: This workshop offers significant opportunities for photographing wildlife, and while we do our best to maximize our wildlife encounters—based on past experiences, local knowledge, and the current conditions—we need to impress upon you that the wildlife really is wild and that we don’t control it.
This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.
Arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), Nairobi, Kenya before 3:00 PM today. Air travel delays are common. Please arrive early, possibly even the day prior, so you don’t miss any of the workshop.
Upon arrival at Nairobi’s international airport, you’ll be greeted by our local team and transferred to a comfortable hotel in the city. Take some time to unwind after your flight and meet your guides for a short trip briefing. This evening, you’ll rest and prepare for the adventure ahead across Kenya’s most diverse landscapes.
Your morning begins with a private charter flight north to the Laikipia region. From the air, you’ll see Kenya’s highlands stretch out into open savannah and rugged escarpments. Once on the ground, you’ll head straight into the wilderness, camera ready, as elephants and giraffes wander through the plains. Over the next few days, this will be your base for tracking one of Africa’s most elusive predators — the leopard.
You’ll spend two full days exploring Laikipia’s vast conservancy, a region known for its high density of leopards and diverse wildlife. Early mornings and late afternoons will be devoted to photographing these cats, while midday hours are for rest, image reviews, and post-processing.
With help from expert local trackers, we’ll look for lions, elephants, and other classic savannah species, along with northern Kenya specialties such as Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and Beisa oryx. There’s also a chance to see the black (melanistic) leopard and habituated African wild dogs if they’re in the reserve during our visit.
When conditions are right, we’ll add a night drive to search for nocturnal wildlife, including leopards on patrol, striped hyenas, aardwolves, African civets, genets, porcupines, and owls, using careful lighting to minimize disturbance and allow for clean images.
This morning, you’ll take a private charter south to the edge of the Great Rift Valley. As you arrive in Shompole Conservancy, the landscape shifts to a semiarid corridor along the Ewaso Ng’iro River that feels truly off the grid.
We’ll spend two nights here using a water-level photographic hide at a busy waterhole, where wildlife comes and goes day and night. Expect regular visits from elephants, giraffes, and lions; with luck, you may also see striped hyenas, leopards, porcupines, or caracals. The hide give true eye-level views for low-angle, close-range images and quiet observation of natural behavior.
Though recently established, the hide has already earned a reputation as one of the best in Africa.
After leaving the water-hole hide, you’ll take a private flight west into the Maasai Mara. We’ll be based in a low-use zone, far from the busy tourist circuits and river crossings that draw the crowds. This area is managed under special conservancy rules that allow us to drive off-road, giving you the freedom to position perfectly for light, background, and behavior—especially when working with big cats.
Our small, intimate camp has just a handful of luxury tents, comfortable yet simple, and ideally located close to prime game-viewing areas. Your first afternoon includes an evening game drive to settle into the rhythm of the Mara.
You’ll have two full days in one of the Mara’s low-use zones. The pace is unhurried; sightings are often just us, and you’ll have the time and space to work a scene properly.
Conservancy rules allow careful off-road driving when appropriate, which is ideal for photography. If a pride of lions settles on a granite outcrop in the afternoon, we can reposition as they wake, then move with them as they start to hunt in the warm light of sunset.
This area holds all of the Big Five, including a small but stable population of black rhino. Expect morning and afternoon game drives, with each guest having their own row in the vehicle. Between drives, you’ll rest, review, and join our pros for targeted critiques and field tips to apply on your next outing.
It’s always hard to say goodbye, but our time in the bush will come to an end. A small private plane will take us back to Nairobi, where we’ve arranged for a day room at a comfortable hotel. Here, you can relax, freshen up, and prepare for your onward journey before being transferred to the airport for your flight home.
In short, you'll feel like you're in a luxury hotel! We've handpicked our camps for comfort, knowledgeable and friendly staff, great food, and convenience to our main objective, the wildlife. We also place considerable value on isolation and exclusivity. You won't find us in areas where dozens of other vehicles are at a sighting—you'll feel like you own the land and the animals are there just for you! Typical tented accommodations feature twin beds or a queen bed, high thread-count linens, storage for clothing, a sitting area, a verandah, and of course, en suite bathrooms with toilets, hot water, and showers. They are enormous in size, bright, open, and airy.
Our days start early, before sunrise. We'll have a quick coffee or tea, maybe a cookie, and off on our first game drive of the day. The animals are starting to stir as the day begins, and we want to be there in the best light. Depending on the sightings, we'll stay out for several hours. After a mid-drive coffee break, we'll continue until mid to late morning. We typically have breakfast in the field to maximize our game-viewing and photographing time. Back in camp, it's time for offloading cards, one-on-one instruction, or just relaxing and doing nothing. Read a book, take a walk, or take a nap and recharge. Of course, there will be lunch, and then In the mid to late afternoon, we'll again head out for another game drive, chasing the best sightings. Enjoying your favorite drink while watching and photographing the sunset is popular. Arrive back at camp after sundown, enjoy a hot shower if you like, and then join us by the campfire or in the living area for cocktails, followed by dinner.
Food in our camps is superb—you'll be served both dishes you know and local specialties, too. Of course, any dietary needs can be accommodated. We've arranged for the best safari vehicles—custom Land Cruisers that feature ample room for you and your gear and excellent visibility. And only one photographer per row of seats (note that the front seat next to the driver counts as a row). Our camps feature optional daily laundry service (but not on days we travel between camps).

We know you have choices, and yes, you can spend less on another safari. Our goal is to give you the best possible experience: maximize time in the field, minimize hassle, and provide world-class photographic opportunities and instruction.
Photography and Guiding: We've handpicked top local safari guides for their deep knowledge of the land and wildlife. You'll also have two photographic guides on this workshop, rotating between vehicles and offering continuous in-field coaching so you're always set for light, background, and behavior.
Vehicle Setup: One photographer per row, guaranteed. Two open vehicles give everyone clean sightlines, room for long lenses, and the ability to reposition quickly without shooting over someone's shoulder.
Details Matter: Our itineraries are curated to deliver outstanding game viewing while avoiding the most crowded areas you see in the news. Where permitted, we secure off-road access so you can get close to the action and capture compelling, intimate photographs.
Photography Instruction: This isn't a photography tour, it's a workshop. Expect hands-on instruction in the field, one-on-one support during the day, and evening image reviews and Lightroom sessions. You'll return with stronger images and a clearer process for making them.
Experience and Trust: We've been leading, guiding, and teaching photographers for years. Many guests return again and again, a testament to the quality of our safaris. If you'd like to speak with a past participant, we're happy to arrange it.
Easy: You must be able to climb in and out of the custom open land cruisers, and ride for several hours on possibly bumpy terrain.
