Kenya Safari Photography Workshop

Exclusive Small Group Safari in the Masai Mara and Shompole

October 19 – 29, 2026

  • Capture stunning wildlife in exclusive Mara conservancies
  • Stunning eye-level shots of wildlife drinking from a waterhole hide
  • Enjoy 1 vehicle row per guest for unobstructed wildlife viewing

The Masai Mara is a vast, diverse ecosystem in southwest Kenya. The open plains are home to millions of animals that follow the rains in search of green grass, and it’s one of the most dramatic of nature’s cycles—and supports some of Africa’s highest densities of predators like lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

On this photography safari, you’ll visit two areas of the Masai Mara, each with its own unique wildlife and scenery, and then spend two nights at a private wildlife photography hide in Shompole—a remote gem just a short flight away.

We avoid the crowds and head to the quieter, lesser-known areas where we can have more intimate and unhurried encounters. Each day starts before sunrise to catch the best light and wildlife activity, then a midday break to rest, recharge, and review your images. We’ll head back out in the afternoon to capture the golden hour and shoot into the dusk.

Expect to learn throughout, with sessions on environmental portraits, capturing motion, wildlife storytelling, long lenses, and more. We’ll help you focus your intent and execution, so your photography gets better and better long after you get home.

Our camps are in prime game-viewing areas—close to the action, yet peaceful and comfortable with good food and hospitality. Designed for photographers, this safari includes in-field instruction from experienced pros, as well as image reviews and post-processing sessions when time allows.

This is more than just a safari—it’s a chance to improve your photography while being fully immersed in one of Africa’s most iconic landscapes.

Karibuni—welcome to the Masai Mara.

Continue your adventure with a post-trip Uganda Gorillas and Chimps Safari, spending time with gorillas and chimpanzees.

Itinerary

About the wildlife: This workshop offers significant opportunities for photographing wildlife, and while we do our best to maximize our wildlife encounters—based on past experiences, local knowledge, and the current conditions—we need to impress upon you that the wildlife really is wild and that we don’t control it.

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

October 19, 2026: VIP Arrival and Relaxing Transition in Nairobi

Upon arrival in Nairobi, you’ll enjoy VIP service to whisk you through the airport, for a stress-free experience. Our guides will then welcome you and accompany you on a short 40-minute transfer to your first accommodation. Here, you can relax in comfortable rooms, recover from your flight, and chat with our guides, who will introduce you to the incredible journey ahead.

October 20, 2026: Scenic Flight to Mara, Exclusive Safari Camp Escape

This morning, you’ll take a scenic flight to the Mara North Conservancy, landing in one of the most exclusive areas of the Maasai Mara. You’ll stay at an intimate camp with just eight rooms, perfectly situated in the heart of the wilderness. Its secluded setting, combined with the skill of our expert guides—who specialise in tracking wildlife independently of other vehicles—offers a truly personal and immersive experience. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the stunning biodiversity of the Maasai Mara, far from the crowds that gather in busier parts of the reserve.

As the sun begins to set, we’ll head out in our safari vehicles, splitting into two groups, each guided by an experienced Masai driver and one of our expert guides. With each person having their own row, you’ll have plenty of space to spread out your gear and enjoy unobstructed views.

October 21–22, 2026: Dawn to Dusk Wildlife Photography in Maasai Mara

We’ll have two days to explore the Mara North Conservancy, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in its remarkable wildlife

You’ll rise early with the wildlife, heading out before sunrise to take advantage of the best light and peak activity. Midday is a chance to rest, download your images, and recharge before returning to the field in the afternoon and staying out through sunset. Our camps are strategically located in prime game-viewing areas, keeping you close to the wildlife. Despite being deep in the wilderness, you’ll enjoy safe, comfortable accommodations and freshly prepared, delicious meals.

Our focus will be on enhancing your photography skills with hands-on guidance in the field. When time allows, we’ll also offer our signature image reviews and post-processing sessions to help you refine your work. This safari is designed to maximise both your photographic opportunities and your overall experience in one of Africa’s most breathtaking landscapes.

October 23–25, 2026: Intimate Lion and Leopard Encounters in Naboisho Conservancy

Next, we head south on a two-hour drive to the heart of another private reserve: the Naboisho Conservancy. For the next three days, we’ll explore this incredible area while staying in a small, thoughtfully designed camp. Managed by local Masai communities, the conservancy follows strict rules to protect its wildlife. Their efforts have transformed what was once overgrazed savannah into one of Africa’s premier locations for observing predators.

Naboisho boasts one of the highest lion densities in the world, offering unparalleled opportunities to observe and photograph these majestic creatures. We’ll spend time with them, watching their behaviour and waiting for the perfect moment to capture them in action. The conservancy is also one of the best places in the Mara to spot elusive leopards. With the expertise of our guides, we’ll track them by following their footprints and paying close attention to alarm calls from birds and antelopes.

October 26–28, 2026: Exclusive Wildlife Watching from Underground Hides

After breakfast, we’ll take a short flight south to a completely different environment. Set near the Tanzanian border, this semi-arid landscape feels truly off the grid.

We’ll spend two nights at a pair of underground hides built specifically for photographers. Positioned at busy waterholes, the hides attract a steady flow of wildlife both day and night. Expect regular visits from elephants, giraffes, and lions—and with some luck, you may also see striped hyenas, leopards, porcupines, or even a caracal.

It’s a remote, peaceful setting that offers rare photographic opportunities—low angles, close encounters, and intimate viewing of natural behavior.

October 29, 2026: Departure Day: Scenic Return to Nairobi, Day Room Relaxation

It’s always hard to say goodbye, but our time in the bush will come to an end. A small private plane will take us back to Nairobi, where we’ve arranged for a day room at a comfortable hotel. Here, you can relax, freshen up, and prepare for your onward journey before being transferred to the airport for your flight home.

Behind the Scenes

What is safari camp life like?

Imagine staying in a luxury hotel—only you're surrounded by the breathtaking wilderness of the Masai Mara. We've handpicked our camps to ensure comfort, knowledgeable and friendly staff, superb food, and prime proximity to the wildlife. We also value exclusivity and isolation, avoiding areas crowded with vehicles so you can feel like the land is yours, with wildlife appearing just for you.

rYour accommodations are spacious and bright, with twin or queen beds, high thread-count linens, storage space, a sitting area, a verandah, and en suite bathrooms with hot showers, toilets, and sinks. These elegant, airy tents offer all the comforts you need while keeping you connected to nature.r

Our days start early, just before sunrise. After a quick coffee or tea (maybe with a cookie), we'll head out on our first game drive to catch the animals as they stir with the day's first light. Depending on the sightings, we'll stay out for several hours, often enjoying breakfast in the field to maximise our time with the wildlife. Back at camp, the midday is yours for relaxing, offloading your images, or taking advantage of one-on-one instruction. You can read, take a walk, or simply rest and recharge. Lunch will be served, and in the late afternoon, we'll head out again, chasing the best sightings as the golden light sets the stage for stunning photographs.

After sundown, you'll return to camp for a hot shower and join us by the campfire or in the living area for cocktails before a delicious dinner featuring both familiar dishes and local specialties. Any dietary requirements will be accommodated with care.r

Our custom Land Cruisers are designed for photographers, with ample space for gear, excellent visibility, and only one photographer per row. Daily laundry service is available at all camps except on travel days.r

This thoughtfully crafted safari ensures your experience is not only luxurious but also optimised for unforgettable wildlife encounters and photography opportunities.

The Photography Hide

Why a Muench Workshops Safari?

We know you have choices, and yes, you can spend less on another Safari. Our aim is to give you the best possible experience, maximizing your time and minimizing the hassle, while providing the best photographic experience and instruction available anywhere.

Photography and Safari Guiding: We've personally chosen only the best local safari guides for this photographic safari.

Details Matter: Our itinerary is carefully set to bring you the best game viewing and all that the region offers. We arrange things so that we're in areas that are not overly crowded with many other safari vehicles, and we get off-road when possible so we can get close to the action and our subjects.

Photography Instruction: This is a workshop, not just a tour. We will work hard on this safari, with instruction in the field and in camp. Many evenings feature critiques and post-processing instruction after dinner, and during the daytime we offer one-on-one instruction as needed. You'll come away with a wealth of new knowledge not only on how to create great imagery but how best to process those images in Lightroom and Photoshop.

Years of Experience—Happy Repeat Customers: We've been leading, guiding and teaching photographers for a long time—and we have thrilled customers who come back on our workshops again and again to prove it. If you'd like to speak to someone who has been with us on a workshop or safari, just let us know, we'd be happy to arrange a phone call.

Fitness

Easy: You must be able to climb in and out of the custom open land cruisers, and ride for several hours on possibly bumpy terrain.
