Northern Norway Photography Workshop

Northern Lights over Steep Mountains and Icy Coastlines

January 23 – 31, 2027

  • Photograph Northern Lights in remote arctic mountains
  • Capture colorful low light and blue light landscapes
  • Inland Norway where there are more clear skies to see Aurora

Our winter workshop takes you deep into the Arctic landscapes of northern Norway, where Tromsø, set high above the Arctic Circle, transforms into a snow-covered world of frozen lakes, inland fjords, and rugged mountains. With limited daylight and long stretches of soft, low-angle illumination, this region offers rare opportunities for winter landscape photography, muted pastels, long exposures, and the shifting atmosphere of polar light. Far from the coast, where skies tend to stay clearer, you’ll be well positioned for Northern Lights photography, capturing the aurora’s movement over a variety of landscapes. Steep mountains tower over quiet valleys and untouched snowfields, creating both drama and tranquility in beautiful light.

In addition to ground-based shooting, this environment is ideal for thoughtfully executed drone photography. The stable, low-angle winter light enhances aerial compositions, while the expansive frozen terrain, winding fjords, and sweeping mountain ridges reveal entirely new patterns and perspectives from above. We will discuss best practices for operating drones in subzero temperatures, battery management, sensor care, and safe flight planning, so you can capture crisp, cinematic images while navigating the unique challenges of Arctic conditions.

One of the defining features of winter photography here is the light itself. The “blue hour” can last for several hours, wrapping the landscape in deep blues and magentas that glow across the snow-covered terrain. This soft, diffused light is ideal for revealing subtle textures in the snow, turning even simple scenes into mood-rich compositions. As day fades into night, we will be ready for the first hints of aurora, using strong foregrounds to create impactful images rather than just pictures of the night sky.

Learning is a constant throughout this photography workshop, with a focus on techniques such as near/far compositions, exposure bracketing, the correct use of shutter speed to capture details in the aurora, and others as appropriate. Your instructors will be with you in the field and in the classroom during our signature image review, helping you refine camera settings, enhance composition, integrate drone footage into your workflow, and establish a reliable approach to cold-weather shooting, so you leave Tromsø confident in your ability to photograph in icy, Arctic conditions.

Itinerary

This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, local conditions, and other factors.

January 23, 2027: Welcome to Tromsø: Intro Meeting, Dinner, and Aurora Hunt

Arrive in Tromsø before 3:00 PM local time. We’ll gather at our hotel for our introductory meeting before a nice dinner and possible aurora hunt, depending on the conditions. Our small group will be spread out in two vans, giving everyone plenty of space for their photography packs, tripods, and warm clothing.

January 24–26, 2027: Exploring Tromsø: Northern Lights, Arctic Landscapes, and Photo Workshops

We’ll spend these days visiting many locations in deep fjords during low light and under Northern Lights. Drives these days are no more than an hour, and the walks are short. The conditions will be mostly in frozen Arctic environments, with foreground subjects including sheets of ice, snow-covered boulders, beautiful trees, and, in some instances, buckling ice along the edges of the fjords.

We will conduct our informative image reviews to look over your work and teach the best ways to make your winter arctic images look stunning. We ensure that we schedule these meeting times to avoid missing any great photography opportunities.

January 27–30, 2027: Discover Remote Arctic Beauty: Village Stay, Mountain Views, Forest Treks

We’ll be changing our hotel to a location away from Tromsø. This location will be our new hub, to visit even more incredible Arctic locations where towering, steep mountains will soar above frozen streams and beautiful forests. The hotel will be a warm atmosphere after a fun long day in the cold. There will be plenty of opportunities to venture out into the frozen conditions and capture a diverse range of landscapes in various lighting conditions.

January 31, 2027: Farewell Shoot and Breakfast: Final Captures and Departures from Tromsø

With good conditions, we’ll have a morning shoot and our last breakfast together before you are taken back to Tromsø for your flights home. You will be back in time to make any flight home after 2:00 PM local time.

I was highly impressed not just with Norway, but with Muench Workshops as an organization. Thank you for the experience. It was truly rejuvenating.

Both Talor and Virgil were excellent as leaders and coaches. Each has a very distinctive photographic artistic style, both of which I loved learning from. Both were extremely competent at camera/software tech. I found myself enjoying Talor's exercise of creating a "story" with photos, rather than just individual trophy shots. Virgil's exhaustive knowledge of Greenland and Svalbard was amazing.

Cody is a master of selecting a time and place to capture the aurora. We were in place before others. Cody offered places to visit based on the conditions, every day. Matt gave camera instructions for composition, camera settings and review of a photo on how it could be improved. They complemented each other with guidance and enthusiasm.

Matt and Cody's professionalism shone through in their expert organization and clear presentation of materials, ensuring that the workshop ran seamlessly from start to finish.

At my age, I do not look at things in dollars but in whether they are worthwhile. The trip seemed expensive, but witnessing how hard Talor and Cody work, how demanding the environment is, and how much effort they expend to ensure we have a positive adventure, I would conclude this was a great value.

I appreciated Cody's insider knowledge of the area's photo spots. I liked that Talor and Cody took us to less traveled spots far from the photographer tourist traps.
